KB956841 - MS08-064 Crashed Vista
I installed the Microsoft update KB956841 MS08-064. I clicked yes to reboot my computer and it crashed while booting back up. A boot loader-like black screencame up with two options - 1) select my windows installation or 2) select memory diagnostics. I selected my windows installation and per the computerntoskrnl.exewas corrupt and referenced 0xc0000098 I am running Windows Vista Business Edition Service Pack 1. I booted from my Vista dvd and let it do the startup repair. Startup repair fixed the problem by doing a system recovery and my computer worked again. I originally installed the update using pkgmgr (Package Manager). Anybody else experiencing problems with the security update MS08-064??

I am having a similar problem with XP Pro w/sp3. After installing, my computer goes into an endless reboot cycle. Trying to boot into Safe Mode does not work, nor does it get far enough into the boot process to display the XP Graphic and scrolling bars. No useful information is displayedwhen the computer reboots. I was ablefix using the recovery console to uninstall this update. Update installed throughMicrosoft Update.

This happened to me as well. I had to work with DELL to get my laptop up and running again. It required a complete reinstallation of the factory default setup, formatting the hard drive, etc. Luckily it is a new laptop and we hadn't put any of our files from the old PC on it yet. We didn't loose anything but a bunch of time get it up and running. I guess I'll be skipping this update!

This issue can be caused by software conflicts during booting up. I suggest you enter Safe Mode, remove the update then reinstall the update in Normal Mode to check the result. If the issue still occurs, we can use msconfig to check boot up program and services especially antivirus program to narrow down the cause: 1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility. Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Restart the computer and test the issue. Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK". Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment. If the issue disappears, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
