KB947215 - User Profile Service failed the logon
I've had this problem occur at random on 40+ systems in our domain (and counting) in the last couple of months. The tech have been manually fixing things but are now looking towards me for the root cause and how to fix it "permananently". I could burn some PSS hours, but want to begin here. So, I could use some clarification on KB947215, regarding temporary user profiles. First, the KB states that "This error may occur if the 'Do not logon users with temporary profiles' Group Policy setting is configured." - we do not have this GPO inplace. Would it help prevent this temp profile problem if we did implement the GPO? Second, does anyone actually know the root cause of this? I've seen everything from the above GPO as the cause, to AV (we use FEP), to Google Updater, to temp Internet files. Third, is there a hotfix which helps prevent this? There is nothing in the KB or elsewhere that I can find, but no one is specifically asking about it either. Thanks!! Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Permissions are most likely the root cause. In the past when I have run into this problem I would elevate user to local admin temporarily, have them log off and login and that would fix the problem. Just don’t forget to remove the user from local admin group.

Actually, perms shouldn't be the root cause. The problem occurs on a mix of systems both with/without admin perms. But thanks for the reply!Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Miya, thank you for the info. Yes it is true that when tech support performs the steps in KB947215 that it resolves the problem in that specific instance. I still have two questions that are yet to be answered, take a look these and if you have answer, that would be great. First, the KB states that "This error may occur if the 'Do not logon users with temporary profiles' Group Policy setting is configured." - we do not have this GPO inplace. Would it help prevent this temp profile problem if we did implement the GPO? Second question has been answered. Third, is there a hotfix which helps prevent this? There is nothing in the KB or elsewhere that I can find, but no one is specifically asking about it either.Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

There isn't much to update on this inquiry since the "root causes" are too varied, there is not hotfix, and not have the GPO does not prevent the issue (and vice versa). Based upon the responses, there is nothing proactive that can be done to prevent the issue. All that we can do is continue to manually fix the issues as the arise, even as they grow in frequency.Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Hi Nick, After follow the KB947215 to fix the issue, does it happen again on the same computer? It seems the issue is resolved. Since the root causes are varied, the only suggestion is auditting those user profiles which don't encounter the issue yet. That I think is a pretty tough process. Or you can contact Microsoft Customer Service: http://support.microsoft.com . A professional engineer will help you to fix the issue. Thanks for your understanding. I agree that the KB fixes the issue, but the question is then always "how long is it fixed". I haven't personally seen any reoccurances, but whatever is causing it could certainly cause it again. Anyhow, I appreciate your dialog and assistance :-)Nick Moseley - SCCM Admin http://t3chn1ck.wordpress.com

Hi Nick, Glad the issue is resolved and without reoccurance. I cannot reproduce this problem on my side, therefore, I'm afraid I cannot help you narrow down the issue. If you have enough time, auditting the user profile could be the method to find the cause. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation! Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Miya, I manage about a thousand public access computers and I have seen this problem return on the same machine that I fixed a few days earlier. When it does the solutions in KB947215 no longer works. I also would like to know what the root cause of this issue. To tell the truth I am highly skeptical of the notion that there is more than one answer to that question. I think what is more likely is that each person who is encountering the problem is viewing it from their own unique perspective. Regarding your suggestion to contact Microsoft tech support, first of all that costs money and secondly, it seems to me, considering how long this problem has been arround and the abundance of links related to it, that Microsoft would have discovered the root cause of the problem by now and provided a fix that works permanently.
