KB936181 was fine and now wants to reinstall over and over
I am running Vista Ultimate 32 and recently updated my Norton 360 to 2.0 and Java. Also, the update for Vista SP1 was available, but I have not installed it yet. The other day my computer didn't want to start and after a couple shut downs & reboots Inoticed that some XML files were being erased. Now, my system wants to reinstall KB936181 over and over & each time it says it was successfully installed. I've tried a couple fixes for this update that were listed - going to cmd & renaming the file, but it says access is denied. I am the administrator, so I don't understand that. I've tried changing directories, but I'm don't know. This is what it is doing: C:\users\M & M\ ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old access is denied I try to reinstall it on the windows website & get this error message "Error opening installation log file. Verfiy that the specific log file location exists and is writeable." I get the same message if I try to install KB941833. I've also tried a system restore, but it didn't work. Is there any way I can reinstall these files? I have the Vista install disk, but don't want to wipe my computer clean. Can I just repair or reinstall these specific ones? Please help! I don't want to even think about installing sp1 if there's any chance to create a bigger mess! Thank you!

Hi, Thanks for posting here! From the post, I understand that update KB936181 kept reinstalling on the system and it was successfully installed. Now, it cannot be reinstalled with "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specific log file location exists and is writeable". I suggest we first remove the update via Programs and Features: 1. Click Start, go to Control Panel. 2. Double click Programs and Features. 3. Locate the update KB936181 and remove it. 4. Then, please restart the computer and reinstall it . Let's see if the error message still occurs. Best regards,

Well, thanks for the reply! I tried uninstalling it & reinstalling it, but after it seemed to have worked for a few days. The ding dong update reappeared! I have no idea what's going on with that! Someone at Microsoftupdatehelp suggested that hide the update, so I've tried that for the time. I'll keep you all posted on what's going on here. Thanks for any & all suggestions!

I've been having the same problem too, and it's getting pretty annoying. For reference, I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop.

Had the same problem myself. Here's the steps I took to resolve it, andsome useful MS articles First, make sure none of your system filesare corrupt. To check system files: Click Start > in the start search box, type cmd > right click on the file and choose run as administrator > at the command prompt, type Sfc/scannow > wait for theutility to complete. Next, make sureWindows Module is enabled. Click Start >in the start search box, type services > right click on the file and choose run as administrator > scroll down the list until you find Windows Module Installer > right click on the file, choose Properties > startup type should be automatic > click on the logon tab > click on Local system account > click on Recovery Tab, set failure options (I set as Restart the service -- If you click Restart the Computer, click Restart Computer Options to specify how long the computer waits before restarting. You can also create a message to send automatically to remote users before the computer restarts > Select Enable actions for stops with errors in order to trigger the recovery actions that the service stopped with an error. Follow these steps & refer to the articles below. Check system files Enabl WMI Remov the update KB935181 Delete the Msxml4.dll file from the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder Repaire the previous installation of MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel Confirmthat the installation was successful by verifying the version of theMsxml4.dll file in %systemroot%\System32 GOOD LUCK! http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729/ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941833/

I am having similar issues (Vista 32 bit Home Premium SP1) that I have kept up to date with patchesThe difference is the patch (KB936181) installs, shows up in update history, over and over, but does not show up in "Uninstall an update"I have ran the procedures detailed by jms0530, and they do not report anythingAlan
