KB92833
The microsoft guy explained that the BUG people see is a design change. and to all u m/s critics.. HE'S RIGHT. with a small reservation. some time ago, the experts saw a NEED forDHCP BRODCASTchanges... Of course, the people who make hardware, can't be expected to comply asap. so it's a mtter of time till we see the new equipment ready for that standard. so what are we to do? the new Digital-TV stuff is scheduled for next FEB, in the US, a few years later for other countries, but it all started years ago. it takes time for the consumers and the hardware people to make the progress that we want. so on that side I agree with him.. OEMs should have read the writings on the wall. ON the other hand, m/s should have put their foot down and done this -- Have every vista-ready certification revoke, since this hardwatre /software change was NOT ADAPTED. and piss off the OEMs. but they (MS)have a heart or common-sense(bussiness sense) and did not go that way. BUT I am upset with bell-canada and other ISPs, who rent a modem that does not conform. we pay a rental to get the best. and they won't acknoledge the h/w they have is not compliant. they also want nothing to do with kb92833... unlike the recent thread that M/S responded to, where CABLE ISP guy asked.. what do u reccomend to us, we have customers who need a resolution. can u help? some ISPs , not this one, simply don't care at all. it's all part of the new "business models".. pay and do the least we have to, even if the customers suffer. as long as we get the cash, why make the software work. so.. I don't see or expect a resolution on this or other "hardware software conflicts". BUT it was nice to see a cable-ISP guy talk with a M/S guy.. and try to resolve the situation. that dialogue in most cases doesn't exist, and those 2 people should be commneded. MY resolution would be, as discussed revoke certification, make KB92833 a real fix in SP2(VISTA), to update all our registries to a state of "0", so that compliant and non-compliant users will have relief, and issue a statment of intent to update this in 24 months time, to what m/s thinks it should be (and the IT proffessionals who set this std. said) I have a wireless and ethernet connection (I use the wireless connection for confirmation and testing of the wireless), and the other for setup, and normal-usage. I have the problem, and would like it fixed as well. KB92833 didn't work for me. I assume , 1 day a fix wil come out and will. it's a low priority item for me, but it does irritate me. my isp gave me a 2wire to replace a speadsteam.. didn't help!

Hi, I understand that your network does not work properly. Actually, it is a by-design behavior in Windows Vista that the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 1. As we know, DHCP is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard specified in Request for Comments (RFC) 2131 for simplifying management of host Internet Protocol (IP) configuration: RFC 2131: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2131.txt DHCP in Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003 is IETF standards compliant. Generally speaking, if the network devices are also compliant with RFC 2131, it should work correctly with Windows Vista, no matter whether the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 1 or 0. I understand that some routers and some non-Microsoft DHCP servers cannot process the DHCP discovery packets of Windows Vista if the BROADCAST flag in DHCP discovery packets is set to 1. In such cases, we generally can use one of the following method: 1. Upgrade the firmware of the network device, to ensure that it is also IETF standards compliant. 2. If the device manufacturers or ISPs cannot provide upgrade for their products, we may still need to manually adjust the registry key according to KB article 928233, as a temporary workaround. Also, I will do my best to report your concerns to the related team. Thanks.

I've marked the item as "solved", butwanted to add this addendum. Thanks for the quick reply/response. I also see the distinction, I was "wrong". It is the "standardgroup" that VISTA complies with it; is the "hardware-vendors" who do not YET adopt/are compliant. SO, longterm solution is (1) and short term M/S deliverable is (2). I certainly long for the the 41 years of mainframe expert, I was. Since these PCs have too many issues with them. The mainframes were much easier to handle. IBM said do this : u did or else! if u didn't , customers would react in the negative. seemed a lot easier to handle new functionality , A? They also had (have) a vendor-oem program for testing/accrediation and inter-support to stop "disputes & finger pointing" and encourage "joint collobrations", as well as "futures meetings" with key customers/OEMs to see what could/can be devleoped for everyone's benefit. I assume M/S has these "offerings" as well. Perhaps m/s should have a new forum for these ( M/S and "them") issues, in this discusion forum. that way we can see and so could the ISPs and DELL(and others) suport groups, what the issues are and whose role/responsibilty is best able to "resolve" the issues. LIke I said my ISP(adsl), had no clue on any of the history/background on this issue(and they own the hardware choice being made, i.e. they rent the modem/router to me, as their best choice of h/w). anyways, sorry again for the verbosity, I'm new to this aspect of computers.

Hi, Thank you for your reply and I appreciate your feedback. Just for your reference, in order to help customers on this kind of problems and improve customer experience, also to provide feedback to the products' manufacturers, Microsoft has a support site to help customers to know which devices are compatible with Windows Vista. It will be helpful for many customers. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Default.aspx Customers may submit a compatible or incompatible case on this website and others would refer it when they choose devices. This website is still in BETA phase. We welcome more customers to provide products' feedbacks and suggestions in order to consummate the database and help more people. The information will also be a good feedback to the device manufactures. For compatibility internal devices and software that are already installed in the computer, we can also use Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to help us to check. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx Hope the above information is helpful for you and other customers who encounter compatibility issues. Also, if you encounter further Windows Vista issues and need our assistance, please feel free to post back in our appropriate forums and we will be happy to work again with you. Have a nice day!
