KB3000850 Breaks Start Screen Layout Tiles

Hi All,

I have a problem which is a direct cause of KB3000850, this affects both 64bit and 32bit variants.

We use GPO to apply a start screen layout xml file to our users.

On a PC without KB3000850 it works fine, however if you install this update it breaks the layout.

I've read online a couple of other instances of this, but no concrete fix.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Andy

PS - incidentally, this issue is reintroduced by the December Rollup KB3013769

Hi Andy,

I take a test on my lab machine. import the start screen layout .xml file via local group policy like this:

And then update the group policy, it works fine.

Next, I install KB3000850 successfully as what you said(see screenshot below):

However, even through I restart the computer, the start screen layout still work fine.

Thus the culprit should not be this Windows Update.

Please check and install all available Windows updates and then perform a clean boot to see if the it's caused by some third-party software or service conflict.

Hi,

It occured when I installed both the KB3000850 and KB3013769.

I think that it does not occur to be just one or the other.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

After you have removed the update, login as a new user who should also have the custom menu, I think this will show you a blank one.

Basically, from a clean build, login as user1, gets the custom start screen

Install those updates, login as user1, still gets the custom start screen

Login as user2 (never logged into PC before) and get blank start screen

Uninstall KB's and login as user2, gets the custom start screen

In short, once the updates are installed, the issue affects new users who have not previously logged in before.

I have found a workaround, but it is far from ideal as it means you cannot change that menu xml easily.

From a working user, copy \users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms and \users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolderLayout.bin to the same location in a non working user and this works, but like I say, it is a poor workaround.

Hi Andy and wa7,

Thanks for sharing your workaround method.

I have these two Windows update installed on my computer, all user start screen layout works without any problem.

I also created two users after install these updates, all is OK.

I suggest you applied the layout.xml file under Computer Configuration branch in the Local Group Policy for test.

Hi Karen,

I have the policy applied at user branch.

I know these updates cause it, as if I login as user1 with these installed, and get no start layout, if I remove and then relogin as user1 the layout applies fine.

Hi,

Andy and I are the same trouble at all.

I've set up a SurfacePro3 of 10 units, but it is the same symptoms.
SurfacePro2 too. Other manufacturers PC too.

When you start an update from the shipping state, might be a bug occurs.
And might change in the order in which to install the Windows Update.

For example, after I installed the KB2992611, Credential Manager does not function.
Then,I re-install the KB2992611, recovered.
Even if repeatedly tested all of the SurfacePro3, it is this state.

KB3000850 and KB3013769 might be so.
I currently do not install these two.

Thanks
