KB2850661 - which versions of windows should this apply to ?

Hi

There was a fix released for "Multiple user groups including Remote Desktop Users are missing after you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro using the Pro Pack" problem that was detailed under KB2850661.  On the page describing the problem it says it applies to

  • Windows 8 Pro
  • Windows 8

It turns out I have what looks like exactly the same issue with Windows 8.1.  Now this was issue was actually *really* fixed with a patch (KB 2855336) that applied to all the following:

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 8 Enterprise
  • Windows 8 Pro
  • Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials
  • Windows Server 2012 Foundation
  • Windows Server 2012 Standard
  • Windows RT

Can anyone comment as to whether this fix should also be applicable to Windows 8.1 which is displaying exactly the same symptoms ? I tried to manually apply the patch but it tells me that it is not applicable to my (windows 8.1 pro pack x64) system.

Thanks

Hi Craigdrobinson,

The KB:2850661 is included in the kb:2855336.Here is a link for reference (Pay attention to "Issues that this update rollup fixes " part ):
Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: July 2013
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2855336

" I tried to manually apply the patch but it tells me that it is not applicable to my (windows 8.1 pro pack x64) system."
It is applied to Windows 8 Pro not a Windows 8.1 pro .

Are you meeting an issue that multiple user groups including Remote Desktop Users are missing ?

Hi,

Thanks for coming back so quickly.  The issue is indeed that multiple user groups are missing, and I cannot Select Users on the remote settings tab so that non-admin users cannot be given rdc access.  The symptoms I face are identical to those described in a thread on the TechNet some 2 years ago which describes the problems associated with upgrading from windows 8 core to 8 pro via the pro-pack upgrade. I think that the problem has persisted to 8.1 and the fix for 8 has never been applied to 8.1. Is this possible ? (I would post a hyperlink to the past thread but the TechNet but I cannot because it keeps telling me I cannot until my account is verified - but a search for ""Select Users..." button disabled in Remote Settings" on this forum will pull it up).

Thanks

I've fixed this issue by refreshing my 8.1 pro version, naturally wiping out all my apps and oddly video card driver. However I won't mark this as answered as the original question still exists - should the patch apply to windows 8.1 as well ?

Hi Craigdrobinson,

The KB 2855336 is applied to Windows 8 Pro and it is not applied to Windows 8.1 Pro .I have tried to install it in my Windows 8.1 machine and got a notification like this :

Hi MeipoXu,

I agree with you that this is what happens when you try and apply that patch to windows 8.1 machine. However, that's not really the point - the point is that the issue that this patch was intended to fix persists on 8.1 and a fix for this issue has apparently not been released for 8.1 - or am I wrong ? If so can you point me in the direction of the fix ?

Thanks

Hi craigdrobinson,

Is the Windows 8.1 machine upgraded from the Windows 8 ?

"I've fixed this issue by refreshing my 8.1 pro version"
Do you mean you have resolved the issue by refreshing the machine or the issue persists ?
Obviously the KB 2855336 is not applied to Windows 8.1 Pro.
When did the issue start to occur ?Have you made any modifications to the machine or installed any third party software before this issue ?
First of all ,I would suggest you to run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" or "sfc /scannow"to check the health of the system files .There is a possibility that the system files has corrupted.
Please ensure the machine has got the latest updates.
