K7 Total Security Security System
I own Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.6002-Service PACK 1. I received a call last night from SWREG. Inc who identified themselves as part of the Microsoft Solution World. They showed that I had 2,940 Error and Warning viruses (including System 32 infected). I purchased a K7 Total Security system for one year for $150.00 in order for them to clean my computer. Is this a valid company representing Microsoft, or was I taken for a fool. (I am a retired senior citizen and not very savvy on computer technology.) I appreciate very much your support on this issue. Thanks! adacw

I suspect they got you to look at Event Viewer. Computers always have a lot of errors and warnings. Mostly they mean nothing much. Click Start - Control Panel - choose Classic View in left hand pane - choose Administrative Tools in the right hand pane - then Event Viewer. Look under Event Viewer (Local) - Windows Logs - System or Application. You will always have some warnings and errors. SWREG is an agent for shareware authors, they take payment. Nothing to do with MS. -- .. -- "adacw" wrote in message news:e60bdaf7-ca23-427d-9c0a-659d04048125... >I own Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.6002-Service PACK 1. > > I received a call last night from SWREG. What is a shareware authors? Definitely as their agent, their tactic was to frighten me by making me believe I did not had any choice but to use their service or my computer would crash completely. They also identified themselves by saying they received the virus information from Microsoft and that I should have received an awareness notice from Microsoft. This is dispicable...I imagine I'm not the first senior citizen they have taken in. My question to you, should I cancel my credit card charge! I'm probably asking your opinion too much, but I really would like to have your help. Thanks a lot, adawc

It is a scam. One of many like this. No program can universally fix a computer. Some programs can fix specific problems (and most of those are from microsoft and are free see http://support.microsoft.com/gp/mats#tab0). This same scam also works with malicious web sites poping up messages to get you to buy a program to fix both non existant problems and pretend problems caused by the web site. There is also viruses that work the same way. Microsoft never works the way you describe. They don't collect information on your computer in a way that can identify it. Shareware is where the software is free to trial or free and limited in function. If you like it you go online and buy it. Winzip is the best known shareware product. Some of these scams are also shareware products. In addition to canceling the transaction you could report it to consumer affairs and maybe the police. -- .. -- "adacw" wrote in message news:6c6255cc-ce24-452b-b03b-00d95195b7c3... > What is a shareware authors? > > Definitely as their agent, their tactic was to frighten me by making me > believe I did not had any choice but to use their service or my computer > would crash completely. PS. The software you installed may be a virus. Uninstall it and run a full virus scan. If you need software to do this try this free Microsoft product. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials To learn about scams from the Australian Government http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/tag/TheLittleBlackBookOfScams08 -- .. -- "DavidMCandy" wrote in message news:d5a25aae-e5fa-4289-b110-02fc0c01e761... > It is a scam.
