June 9, 2015 Windows Update caused major problems

On June 9 I selected "update and shut down" on my Toshiba Satellite L55 running Windows 8.1 and went to bed.

The next morning the following processes no longer worked on my laptop: no audio - "audio service not running" (audio troubleshooter didn't fix it - device manager says sound card working properly), no upper row function keys (can't turn my touchpad back on, for example), control panel icons don't appear, PC settings -> Updates & Recovery not functioning.  There was no error message saying updates had not installed.  Processes often stop responding and I have to use Task Manager to shut them down.  Even though no windows are open, at shutdown I get task host messages preventing shutdown.

The only functionality remaining are the apps that don't require sound, IE connection, my wireless mouse and the optical drive.  I fortunately backed up my files just prior to June 9, but I don't know how to get to the update files to uninstall them since control panel and PC settings aren't working.  I can't restore to a previous date since I can't access Recovery.  I have spent hours online looking for a fix.

I'm assuming you mean pressing F8 as the system reboots?  That key doesn't work.

Even though I had set it to do automated restore points, after using the link you posted, I did a system restore but the only restore point listed was for yesterday - there were no dates listed for prior to June 9th.

Hi,

It is suggested to follow below steps to toubleshoot this issue:

  • Open the Start menu, type in 'cmd' (Command Prompt) without quotes, right-click on the application and choose Run as Administrator.
  • In Command Prompt type in:

    sfc /scannow (hit Return/Enter)
  • If you see the message Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
  • If you have Windows installation media (CD/DVD disk or an .iso disk image), please type in:
   DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

where D: is the Windows installation image mounted

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Yan Li
