Issues with folder redirection and mapped network drives...
Hi, I have read through the other posts with this type of issue however I haven't found a solution... Here is my problem: I have a small network set-up with Server 2008 and a number of PC's running Windows 7 (2 desktops and 3 laptops). I have set-up a GPO that redirects all the user folders (My Documents etc.) to a shared user folder on the server. I also have a number of folders on the server set-up as shared (Work, Documents, Design, etc.), these are mapped on the PC's as mapped network drives. The problem I am having is that the Sync service on the PC's is making a local copy of ALL the mapped network folders... I do not want it to! All I want available off-line is the user document folders that are set via folder redirect. We had a very similar set-up with Server 2003 and XP machines and it worked fine... After upgrading to the newer (better?) windows environment this has all stopped... The laptops in particular are wasting resources copying files from the mapped drives that are not needed off-line... I have tried right-clicking on the mapped network folders and deselecting "Always available offline", but it is greyed out... This problem is impacting our productivity, and we are seriously considering going back to the older 2003/xp environment (which worked perfect) and asking for a refund on all the new software! Any productive suggestions would be much appreciated... Phil

If you just map the network share as a drive, it should not be always available offline. To make it available offline you need to choose the option after right-click on the drive. The user profile folders are different. If you redirect them to a network share location, the folders will be automatic Always available offline. You may also check if the folders such as Work, Documents, Design, etc., are forced to be available offline via policy. Please find the policy in Computer Configuration\User Configuration -> Admnistrative Templates -> Network ->Offline Files , chck the policy Administratively assigned offline files.Arthur Xie - MSFT
