Issues with antivirus software
I dont know if anyone can help, but I appear to be having a problem with my anti virus being turned off. This has happened with all the various programmes I have tried...........Trend Micro, Kaspersky & now AVG, all ones that Microsoft tell me are compatible with Windows 7. When I get an error message, from the action centre, I try to turn it on but nothing happens. Sometimes on rebooting the pc it works normally. I am also unable to find a way of turning off windows defender.................any suggestions?

I have had similar issues with Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2009 - it installed but didn't seem to be doing anything! Defender does not seem to disable itself either and should be uninstalled as Bruce comments. Symantec customer support said that they are unable to support the RC version as the code is still changing and that their product will only be guaranteed once the Release to Manufacturer stage has been reached...one hopes there are not too many malicious codes for Windows 7 out there!

Not all anti-virus vendors are up to speed with the reporting features of Windows 7. You can turn off reporting of issues in the Action Center (via the flag like icon in the taskbar) these issues will be ironed out as the code is refined by MS and your AV vendors. AVG works. I know Nortons had early issues but I am uncertain if they have since been resolved. I use Microsoft Security Essentials .

I have been running the latest updated version of NAV09 without issue - EXCEPT- the SONAR component fails to start. Again, as noted elsewhere, Symantec will not support the Win07 product until it goes to GA. Otherwise, no complaints with NAV - much lighter performance footprint than AVG (maybe AVG free version has something to do with that).

Optimus: Is/will Redmond supplying MS SecEss via download? Or must we purcha$e it? I would like to place it on one of my testbeds and benchmark it vs. NAV, McAfee and AVG but CFO (wife) has placed a moratorium on my $$$ for toys, LOL... x18d40 SSgt, US Army SOG, Retired "...You can't get something for nothing, you can't have freedom for free..." - Getty Lee

Yes, however at this time it is a beta and is closed right now. It is will be a FREE download from Microsoft at the time of or shortly after Windows . Also works for Vista/Xp no more subscriptions to AV vendors. This will help make Windows platforms stay on top of the lack ofsecurityclaims by the "others". Its light and effective and with a knowledgeable surfer that you seem to be, should be all you need.

Actually, if you have (or set up) access to Microsoft Connect (http://connect.microsoft.com/) and add MSE beta to your dashboard, it is still available for download. OS support includes: 64-bit Windows 7 and Vista, 32-bit Windows 7 and Vista, and 32-bit XP. I run it on allthree OSs (Windows 7 local and the other two virtual). It is certainly still a beta but it works very well and uses remarkably few resources. When it it goes final, I think it will be a real winner. Given it will be a free product, it also could eventually cause some pain for paid services. I certainly will not be sending Eset or Avast any more money if the final is anything like the beta....Stephen
