Issues with Windows Security
Alright, I installed windows 7 Starter recently and so far it was doing okay for me, but one major problem that is occuring is causing me some fustration. You see I am a big time gamer, I use Steam to play all of my various and wonderful games and play with my friends etc, etc. Well my biggest problem is that for some reason windows wants to prevent me from running my games, I believe the main issue is that it doesn't recognize the .EXE files for my games, specifically ' SteamService.exe '. Now here is where I am confused on the failure of this oh so awesome OS lol. Windows Internet Security is disabled in my windows options, plus when I am not even online it still tells me that it can not open the file because its not set to be with the IE security options. I dont understand what any of this has to do with internet access what-so-ever because Steam can be run offline and without internet access so why would internet security have anything to do with it? I have tried messing with the internet options and adding stuff to the trusted sites along with adjusting the security level to no avail. if ANYONE can help me fix this I would most appreciate it. Oh and one last thing I forgot to add earlier is that it only seems to want to prevent newer .exe games from running. I can play my incredibly older games like Half-Life and other such games from 8+ years ago with ease, dunno why this is but maybe it helps. I would be very grateful to anyone who can help me solve my problem and make it so I can play my games again :(.

Hi, I would like to suggest you check the compatibility between the software and Windows 7: Windows 7 Compatibility 1. If the software is compatible with Windows 7, have you installed the latest Steam? If not, try the new version for test. 2. If the issue persists, check the result in Clean Boot. 3. Also, try to install the program in compatibility mode for test: Make older programs run in this version of Windows Hope it helps. Most of the games that is being prevented from loading are capatible with Windows 7 and I tried doing the Clean Boot as well. I then tried to use the options to make older programs run in windows but that didn't solve it either. I have uploaded some screenshots of the error message in hopes it may provide a bit more detail as to what I am talking about so that someone may understand what it is and explain how I may fix it. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee449/darkgecko89/PIC2.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee449/darkgecko89/PIC1.png Thank you for your suggestions Alex Zhao, I appreciate you trying to help me.

same problem here! Most game load and I can play them regardless, but Chime crashes. All I have installed recently are games and required updates. Plus, I can't even change my user account setting. I can't click the ok button just cancel. I've tried to do that Click Start > Run (or Windows Key + R) and type wscui.cpl and choose Ok. Choose Change User Account Control Settings from the menu on the left. Move the slider to the Never notify option. Select OK and restart your computer Re-test any issues you were seeing with Steam but after I do the command, this appears http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p68/scathach22/bug.png

I am now too having those same issues, why just today I started up my computer and it was telling me that it couldn't even run NEEDED windows .exe files, which caused me to have to restart my computer over and over until it decided to boot properly. I know its not a virus, I have barley touched web browsing with this computer besides to download steam and I am pretty sure steam is a secure download for the games/updates etc, etc so I do not believe its a virus, besides, I have run symantic virus scanner about a dozen + times by now and it has gotten nothing besides some pop-up cookie that it said was a very minor issue. Now it seems it just seems windows security is slowly going to prevent me from using windows at all eventually... :(

Hi, I noticed that the Internet security settings prevented your operation. Try to open Group Policy Editor, go to User Configuration –> Policies –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Internet Explorer –> Internet Control Panel –> Security Page –> Internet Zone (Also Intranet Zone) –> Launching programs and unsafe files, enable policies for test. Hope it helps. Alex ZhaoPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Alex, okay I was trying to find the Group Policy Editor menu in control panel and I tried using the help thing that windows has but I couldn't seem to find it, after some digging around ont he internet I found a forum that had said that Group Policy Editor is only available in Windows 7 Home Edition or higher, is this true? and if so, will I still be able to fix my issue because of that? Thanks for your help, fixing stuff is never easy lol...

You cannot directly configure policy settings in your windows versions, however you could apply them on a different pc, and capture the difference in the registry that's made once the setting is applied. You could then import a .reg file that then sets that specific setting. However, you do need access to another computer from where you can start the GP editor. Take a look at the following link how to do capture registry settings that are made by using group policy editor. http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2007/08/14/deploying-custom-registry-changes-through-group-policy.aspx If you one of these posts answered your question or issue, please click on "Mark as answer". Hi, Due to your Windows 7 version does not support Group Policy Editor, in order to apply the setting “Launching programs and unsafe files”, we could try the following steps to change the Internet settings and check with the issue: 1. Open “Internet Explorer”. 2. Click on “Tools” and then choose “Internet Options”. 3. Choose the “Security” Tab. 4. Click on “Internet” and then click on “Custom Level”. 5. Scroll down and choose “Enabled” under “Launching applications and unsafe files”. 6. Choose “Enabled” under “File Download”. 7. Click on “Apply” and then “Ok”. 8. Close and reopen the Internet Explorer and check with the issue. Also, usually this issue will occur due to the incorrect settings in the registry key. We can recreate the registry key and check with the issue. Important Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, please click the following web link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry To back up registry: 1) Click “Start”, type regedit in the “Start Search” box, and then click “regedit” in the Programs list. 2) Click on “File” ->“Export” and save it as “regbackup”. Change the settings: a. Click “Start”, type regedit in the “Start Search” box, and then click “regedit” in the Programs list. b. Go to the following location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings c. Right click on the “Internet Settings” and then select “Delete”. d. Restart the computer and check with the issue. Hope it helps.
