Issues mapping network shares (hotfix avail for WinXP, not Win7)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812793 So I have this exact issue, but in Win 7. So it suprises me that it was fixed in Win XP, but is essentially broken again in Win 7. Is there an update I am missing?

Hi, Thank you for posting in Technet. Since the hotfix is for Windows XP, this should be already included in later versions of Windows such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. The issue should be caused by different reasons. I suggest you temporary disable the antivirus and firewall since it may block the connection of another user. Additionally, where is the shared folder located? If it is on hard drive of a computer, what is the system of the computer? This issue can also be caused by authentication problems. If the shared folder locates on a NAS, or Windows XP/Server 2003 computer, I suggest you change the default NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. 1. Open gpedit.msc from Start Search box. Then locate to the following policy. 2. Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level 3. Please change “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. Arthur Xie TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com. No antivirus or firewall are enabled. NTLMv2 is already configured. As soon as I type the share to connect to in the MAP NETWORK DRIVE window, I can drop to a cmd and run NET USE and see a connection to the share (which wasn't there before). It is like when I type the name of the share, it attempts to mount it using the current credentials and creates the connection. Disconnecting this from the command line before clicking OK allows me to map the share.

Any one else want to chime in on this potential "bug"? Happens from Win 7 and Windows 2008 R2 machines. Try mapping a network drive while logged in as someone without the required perms on the share. Opt to enter alternate credentials. When the alternate credential dialog opens, drop to a command line and run NET USE and see if a connection to the share is there (even though you haven't told windows what credentials to use). If it is, you are experiencing the same problem as me. I will also add that the share in question (in my case) is housed on a CIFS compliant ZFS filesystem. -M
