Issue with renaming files and folders in windows 7 SP1
Hi I am a support officer at work and have come across an issue that seems to be across about 60% of our fleet (all computers are identical machines). When creating a file or folder we are prompted that the file location no longer exists and to try again. When you try again the folder is renamed or file is renamed. This same issue has been found on a large number of computers in the company seems to have surfaced since service pack 1 was rolled out. Has Microsoft got patch or fix for this issue? I have found some threads about of updating registry keys to fix the problem however we are looking for an official fix for the issue. Going by what I have seen when looking in to it, there does look like this issue has been going on for some time for many people so there should be some sort of official fix for it by now. We are using Windows 7 Pro 32bit on Dell OptiPlex 980 hardware Regards Barry

Barry, I've never run across this problem nor do I remember seeing a KB on this matter. Now that doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist. Could you give me a concrete example of a file name and path you are using AND under what program does this problem occur?

Hi Karl This issue happens under windows explorer, it will happen regardless of what drive you are in e.g. c:\ or a network path, basically you create a directory it will name with the default “new folder” name and will be highlighted ready for rename. You give the folder a name, for example test. You get the following message. “Item Not Found Could not find this item This is no longer located in c:\. Verify the item’s location and try again New folder Date Created: 8/04/2011 Try Again Cancel” You Click Try Again and it will create the folder, the same happens for creating files and will happen every time a folder or file is created and or renamed Every time Try Again is selected it will always successfully create it Regards Barry

Barry, Very nice explanation. Now I'll tell you how I do this. WIN + E key combo to start Windows Explorer WIN is the key with the Microsoft logo flag. In the display of drives, DOUBLE-CLICK ON C: CTRL + SHIFT + N key combo to create a "New folder" | DO NOT HIT Enter yet | type in the desired folder name, for example, NULL PROBLEMO and now hit Enter Of course you can right-click in an open area of the the Explorer display and choose to create a new folder. I'm fond of the ctrl-shift-n combo.

Hi Karl I have tried the folder creation using the process you have described above however the issue still remain, regardless of how you create or rename the folder it will still cause that error as described above. I am fairly sure it is an actual problem in windows. Regards Barry

Barry, I'm just as convinced that is either corrupted operating system or an infected operating system or an operator malfunction. Assuming that I'm correct then: From an elevated command prompt run sfc /scannow If you do not get a clean bill of health, then run sfc /scannow again. If you still do not get a clean bill of health from the System File Checker (SFC), let me know. What anti-virus are you using? What firewall are you using? Are all critical updates installed? Are all important updates installed? Are optional updates relevant to your system installed?

This is a known issue with Windows 7 (pre and it seems post sp1). There are at least three people I directly work with who are experiencing this one. "I'm just as convinced that is either corrupted operating system or an infected operating system or an operator malfunction. Assuming that I'm correct then" It's a bug in Windows 7.
