Issue mapping network drive from Vista to 2003 Server
Hello all. I'm rather embaressed posting such a trivial question - and I hope this is not a trivial answer :) PROBLEM:- I'm trying to map a network drive from a Vista Ultimate RTM image to a 2003sp1 Enterprise server. One particular share refuses to map!! DETAILS:- - New/clean build vista laptop, in an OU with no GPO applied- New/clean user, in OU with no GPO applied. No profile. No logon scripts. member of "Domain Users" only User logs on to laptop okay with no problem. They can map a drive (using explorer or NET USE) to most shared (e.g. \\APP2\Builld) However, user cannot map a drive to \\APP2\shared - they get prompted for a username/password , and when entered get access denied. WHAT I HAVE TRIED:- 1 - User can log on to XP/2003 machine and mapping works perfectly.(suggests share permissions are not at fault) 2 - Created another share on same folder called "test" - with same share permissions (used PERMCOPY to ensure they are the same). NET USE \\APP2\test works PERFECTLY (suggests share permissions are not at fault) 3 - DIR \\APP2\shared works perfectly (suggests file & share permissions are not at fault) 4 - Event log on client and server do not show any errors. They do show successful logon etc for user when drive mapping is attempeted. 5 - Deleted and recreated \\APP2\shared share (No change - suggest share isn't "corrupt") 7 - Compared all settings on \\APP2\shared and \\APP2\test and noted no differences- yet "test" works and "shared" does not 8 - Tried FQDN, IP, DFS paths to same share - no avail (Assuming if Vista is like XP, even if it has a drive mapped to the same path as USER1, changing path to IP allows logon to same server as USER2 - suggests it isn't a case of differing credentials) 9 - Tried NET USE X: \\APP2\shared /user:domain\user password - no change - mainly get error 5 - access denied. WHAT I THINK:- No idea. I think everything is ruled out! Any help appreciated.

I checked and I got a similar error. I could go to a server and in some cases a share on that server would work fine and in some cases the share would fail (different shares). The share I was trying to access that would fail on a regular basis was a distributed file system (DFS) root. I checked all the settings, etc, etc - but still nothing. I was getting the error 0x80070035 (network path not found). I went to my 2003 server and did a packet capture and found that it kept returning Flags: 0x8183 (Standard query response, No such name) After playing with it a bit I figured out that we have a domain that is child.parent.com and it was always checking server.domain.com instead of server.child.parent.com - so I updated the DNS search list with child.parent.com. This permanently fixed the issue. Just fyi - this happened whether I used the IP address, FQDN or just the server name. I'm not sure why it isn't using the FQDN when I put in \\servername.child.parent.com\sharename - but at least the fix works. Not sure if this is the same issue you are having, but see if it helps. Thanks Jason

Interesting. I wonder if this would fix one my issues I'm having at my office as well.We have a workgroup that is separate from the AD Domain due to the fact that they are Mac based machines as well as Unix based cluster nodes(Isilon Storage Systems).I can log in to one via the designated username-password but when restart my computer into Vista mode the connection is lost and I can not reconnect anymore. It blocks me from getting to it anymore!! I'm looking in the gpedit area but haven't quite found what I need to yet, still looking but figured I'd ask if anyone else has come across this and found what needs to be changed.Since the machine I am using is joined to the domain it most likely is some permissions/settings for non domain machine authentication issue.

I have the same problem. My Logon Script tries to map several drives. But only drives that are getting mapped are the First ones per unique server box, rest all getting the same error. It does not let me map those drives manually. gives the same error:System error 1219 has occurred.Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again. The script works fine on windows XP boxes.Does anyone have the solution ...Bhuvan

Hi,I have issues with mapping network drive from Vista to Windows 'not-so' Advance Server 2000.I am able to map network drive from XP and copy files over to win 2000.However, I am not able to copy files from Vista. I can see the mapped drive on win 2000 but everytime I drag and drop the files it attempts to copy until it fails with a message:There is a problem accessing C:\Users\Public\Documents\myfile.zipMake sure you are connected to the network and try again.I see a Big Red X on the network drive icon below despite being able to view the files on win 2000.This is a major embarrasement for Microsoft windows 'kernel' engineers. How can a company with 200 Billion dollars recruit such idiots that can't do something so simple. They should fire the file system kernel group and replace the file system with Sun Microsystem ZFS or NetApps.

Guys,I did encounter the same issue when I was using Vista on my home network. My vista is fresh installed. Fortunaltely, at my work place we are performing Vista pilot and with work-vista machine I do not encounter the issue. They trick was a Reg key update. Here is the Key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa and the Key is "LmCompatibilityLevel" - Change the default value 3 to 1 then reboot. Thanks,J

I had the same problem with a new Vista Business system in my (home) Office workgroup connecting to a Linksys Network Storage Link for USB2 drives. This tip fixed the problem immediately. Thanks
