Is there any way to install Cisco VPN Client on Windows 7 x64?
Hey gang,Just curious if anyone found a way to install Cisco VPN client on a Windows 7 x64 machine? Cisco doesn't support VPN on x64 OS's, but thought maybe someone found a workaround?fyi, latest version of VPN is vpnclient-win-msi-5.0.05.0290-k9-thanks

Hey Flayofish, If the above VPN client works on Vista x64, then try the following: 1. Right click on the executable, and select Properties 2. Under Compatibility tab, tick "Run this program as...", and select Windows Vista from the drop down. 3. Click OK, and try installing the VPN client. If the above doesn't work, the following VPN client works on x64 OS, and support Cisco VPN: Lancom Advanced VPN Client (Paid) Shrew (Free) - Not recommended, might give you BSOD during installation. Hope this helps. Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

Thank you for the reply.I would highly recommend you don't install "Shrew". Nasty BSOD 1/2 way through the install process. Had to roll back to last known good to recover. Kept rebooting and BSODing right after logon.

Thanks for the feedback. I have edited my above response accordingly. Let us know if Lancom Advanced VPN Client works. :)Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

Only Cisco's AnyConnect VPN client works with 64 bit versions of Windows. However, someone's created a front end for the Windows port of VPNC that works well with 64 bit XP and allegedly with 64 bit Windows 7. I've had trouble using it with the 32 bit version of Windows 7 but your mileage may vary. http://vpncfe.sourceforge.net -Gary

I used the Windows XP mode for it to work. Works very easy. Wrote a quick how-to about it here: http://blog.vanefferenonline.nl/install-cisco-vpn-client-on-windows-7-64-bit/Hopefully it can help you as well.

I didn't want to use VM so I tried NCP. It worked great but at $144 for license it was more than I wanted to pay. So I kept looking and found open source client - Shrew. They have 64-bit RC version for Windows 7. Install took less than a min and it imported cisco .pcf config file. I was on the network in couple min! Thanks for saving me $144, I'll donate 10% of that to the Shrew crew.Few notes: Make sure you download the right version. I first downloaded stable version which isn't 64 bit so it crashed the OS. I installed 2.1.5-rc-4Also, I uninstalled NCP and rebooted before installing Shrew. 2.1.5-rc-4 Oct 01 2009

I have Windows 7 x64 running on a X300 Lenovo laptop and have managed to get both NCP and Shrew running fine. NCP certainly was more trouble free. Both imported the Cisco certificate without a problem. Careful on the Shrew, you need the beta version for Windows 7and not the Vista x64 version as the vista x64 will give you the BSOD. Should that happen, start in safe mode and restore to a previous safe point. The beta version may give you a few warnings on the way in, but it works fine.Hope this helps:)

I don't share your experience. I had several BSOD's when disconnecting an active VPN connection. While running it works perfectly, but closing a connection causesBSOD-s.

I did install the version as displayed in an earlier post: 2.1.5-rc-4. I have Windows 7 64-bit running on a Dell Vostro 1720 with 8gb. I had to restore indeed toa previous restore point, so no harm was done. Great feature by the way ;-)

Hi, I went to your blog and looked up the post that you wrote. It really helped me install and start the CISCO VPN Client. I am using the CISCO Anyconnect VPN Client. I was able to install it earlier as well on both virtual machine and my actual Windows 7, but when I tried to log in, it would throw me an error saying that there are multiple users logged onto this machine and hence, it cannot be started. But when I followed your suggestions from your blog, I was able to start my CISCO VPN client and connect to the sites on the network using my virtual pc. I then tried to log off the virtual pc and tried to connect to the VPN client from my Windows 7 Desktop. Again, I was able to connect to the VPN client without any problems. So, when I look at my icons in my task bar, I see that VPN client is connected and it says "Remote" in brackets. But when I try to launch any of the applications or links on my network from my main Windows 7 Desktop, I cannot connect to any of them. It is almost as if the Desktop is not on the VPN. Am I missing something or some step here or can I not get to my network from my main Windows 7 Desktop? Thanks for your assistance. Pradeep

Indeed the VPN client is running and showing in your taskbar, but it is still running in your virtual environment. Hence your applicaties from your windows 7 are not able to connect to it. What you need to do is install the application that require the VPN connection also on the virtual machine and export them your windows 7 environment. At that point your applcations will also run in the virtual environment and can use the vpn connection.

vpnc Front End (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vpncfe/) works fine in Win 7 x64. And you can import your pcf file to vpncfe profile. P.S. Using version 0.7.9

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I installed vpncfe. It seemed to install fine. It shows up as "local area connection 2" in the task manager and resource monitor. However it's disconnected. How do I establish a connection? Do I need another piece of SW? Thanks for any help.

I installed the Cisco VPN client under XP Mode, then routed the VPN traffic through that. You can add the XP Mode VPN client as a shortcut on Windows 7 so that the application runs transparently. Walkthrough is here: http://blog.benpowell.co.uk/2010/02/howto-cisco-vpn-client-on-windows-7-64.html I find that it works really well. I'm also using Shrew as well as a backup. The bonus is that you can then run two different VPNs connections simultaneously.

How can you import the pcf file into the vpncfe profile? Right click on the system tray icon, choose Options -> Import PCF, browse to your file and select it, then answer yes when prompted to overwrite your current settings.

Cisco now has a native 64-bit version of the VPN Client.

The last note says that Cisco now supports 64-bit but I love my workaround- it's been working great for two years- on Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. I run the free Sun/Oracle Virtual Box VM with XP as the OS and run Cisco's VPN Client from there. The beauty of this solution is that you don't lose your local network on your host platform- use the VM for VPN and stay on your home network on the big box. http://www.virtualbox.org/

Hey Flayofish, I ran into the same issue with a client pc. The workaround for me was to install a virtual machine like "virtual box" and loaded windows 7 32bit os...then installed the 32bit Cisco VPN client. Works great.
