You need administrative rights to do this. Be careful as it is possible to easily create a very difficult to troubleshoot mess. Run gpedit.msc Go to - User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Internet Explorer - Delete Browsing History Turn off "Delete Browsing History" Functionality Enabled. You also probably want to Configure -InPrivate Turn Off InPrivate Browsing Enabled if you are using IE8; otherwise the user can simply avoid recording it in the first place. Also -Browser menus Tools Menu: Disable Internet Options... menu option Enabled would be good; Anyone who should not be able to delete history should also not be modifying too many things in Internet Options. For Some reason, changes to this group policy setting have no effect in either IE6 or IE8 on an XP Pro Workgroup computer. I would actually like to inactivate the entire Tools menu item; however, there does not appear to be any means to do so. Run gpupdate /Wait:0 Any user who cannot access gpedit.msc, edit the registry (regedit.exe, regedt32.exe) or mmc.exe cannot reactivate the now greyed out menu items. Note: mmc.exe can be activated by right clicking My Computer even as a Limited User. Remove or Deny Permissions to such files to non-administrators. I would like to configure these on a per-user or user group basis. Does anyone know of a way to do so when not part of a domain? I do not know of a direct way to retrieve sites deleted from History. Perhaps they enter the Recycle Bin somewhere. They can be captured by network monitoring programs, even if they have been removed from the individual computer.
