Is my Windows 7 real?
I bought a new Dell Laptop a few days ago from an approved Dell store or a "Dell Quality Experience Center". I live in China so the first thing they asked me when I asked about price was "Do you want real or fake Windows?" I asked for a real
copy of English Windows 7. They told me that they didn't have a copy at that moment but they would send me a copy the next day. The laptop already had a copy of Chinese Windows 7 installed on it.
The next day I recieved the English version and installed it. When I installed it there was no prompt to enter the product key. When I looked at my
properties I noticed that product key was 00371-OEM-8992671-xxxxx. The product key on the back of the laptop is JMJWQ-TRPP4-46V7G-xxxxx-xxxxx. The product key on the English Windows 7 disc is D37M6-6JBYR-BTXBP-xxxxx-xxxxx. Because none of them match
up I have become suspicious.
Despite the numbers all being different, I have not recieved and notifications telling me that my version is fake. Nor has my laptop told me that I have 30 days to activate my Windows. Through the Microsoft website I tried to veryify my Windows and it told
me my version was real. I did a search of the product key number 00371-OEM-8992671-xxxxx which is lisedt in my
properties and it seems that other people have the same product key and have had problems with activation.
Can anyone tell me if I have a problem? I would feel so much more comfortable if the product key in my properties matched the one on my Windows 7 disc.

The product ID displayed in System Properties isn't the same as the license key used in the installation.
Use a utility like this one to display the key:

(The key is kept in the Registry, but it's encrypted.)

Thanks bobkn. I downloaded the program and it says that my product key for Windows 7 is 32KD2-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx. That's different again to the other three. Any explanations?

Well as it did not ask for the key a good guess is that you have a hacked version, as for it passing the test..."Through the Microsoft website I tried to veryify my Windows and it told me my version was real." that really means nothing as any day the key
could be put on the blacklist and then when a WGA update comes in...BAM..non-genuine.
Check the copy of windows you got.

Unfortunately you've posted your product key in a public forum, and
that makes it available for all the world to see. The result of doing
that will probably be that software pirates will start using it and
then Microsoft will blacklist that key.

An approved Dell store would not be offering you an illegal copy of Windows 7. I would contact Dell and let them know about this, see what they do.Rich The only two things that are infinite in size are the universe, and human stupidity. Sorry. I should have mentioned that posting a key is a poor idea. You may have trouble if you ever need to activate again.

Hi,
You may change the product key with the one came with your English Windows 7 disk and try to activate it.
You may also run SLUI 4.exe and follow the wizard to activate Windows 7 by calling Microsoft Activation Center.
