Is more than 4 minutes an abnormal boot time?
I've tried a number of ways to speed up the time it takes from when my PC is completely turned off until it will let me launch an application from a desktop icon. Right now that takes about 4 minutes and 15 seconds. That seems too long to me, but I don't know what's considered normal. Here's what I've done so far...1. Found a Web site called 99 Ways to Make Your Computer Blazingly Fast and implemented most of the tips there (I noticed the content is duplicated several other places, so it seems to be a popular resource).2. Used a feature in my Norton 360 Premiere Edition called the Startup Manager to either turn off unnecessary startup processes or delay them.3. Used Microsoft's Autoruns to turn off more than 30 unnecessary items.(Note: I'm not using MSCONFIG because it incorrectly tells me I don't have administrator rights and then causes me to have to go through the "last known good configuration" step.)In case it helps, here is my System Info ...OS Name Microsoft Windows XP ProfessionalVersion 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600OS Manufacturer Microsoft CorporationSystem Name PCSystem Manufacturer INTEL_System Model D865GBF_System Type X86-based PCProcessor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~2992 MhzBIOS Version/Date Intel Corp. Hi Okieseeker,Do your system take more time during shutdown? Try Downloading User Profile Hive cleanup fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en. You can also try Chkdsk /f (Click Start -> Run & Type -> chkdsk /f c:) this will ensure you dont have any crosslink files on your drive.Hope this helps.

Shutdown time is pretty quick. But I will try Chkdsk. FORGOT TO INCLUDE FOLLOWING INFO...Under System, the Event Viewer only shows one warning during startup: Adapter Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection: Adapter Link DownIn Device Manager, I see the following abnormal entries:-A red X on the icon for Standard floppy disk controller-A red X on the icon for Intel 537EP Modem (I don't have a modem installed)-A red X on a yellow icond labeled Multimedia Audio Controller

Have you updated your drivers from here:http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Desktop+Boards&ProductLine=Intel%c2%ae+865+Chipset+Family+Boards&ProductProduct=Intel%c2%ae+Desktop+Board+D865GBFBe very wary of the "blazing fast PC" sites. A lot of them are pay per instance, and others can cause more damage than good.If you don't have a floppy drive installed, make sure it's disabled in BIOS. Same with an onboard modem, if your board is so equipped and you don't plan on using it.SC Tom-There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support.

2. Used a feature in my Norton 360 Premiere Edition called the Startup Manager to either turn off unnecessary startup processes or delay them.3. Used Microsoft's Autoruns to turn off more than 30 unnecessary items.2. Dumping Norton 360 might have been the single solution.3. What now works correctly <G>?Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I thought the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service was only useful when the system is attached to a Windows Server domain and there are specific errors of 1517 and 1524 found in the Event View log.It is not a good ideas to just install UPHC Service just for the heck of it on a system that seems slow to log off.Installing UPHC Service on a system that is not in that environment and does not have those specific symptoms will negatively impact the system start uptime and overall performance since the UPHC Service will have to load on startup and keeps running on the system all the time.On my system (where I am all about speed), if I add the UPHC Service, my boot time increases by 3.557 seconds and the UPHC Service is running all thetime consuming CPU and RAM (even though it is a small amount) but I would rather have that CPU and RAM be used for things that I want so my systemwill run faster. If you see a system that is slow to log off and it is not in a Windows Server domain and do not see error 1517 and 1524 in the Event Viewer, installing UPHC Service makes no sense. What does make sense is to capture and log the shutdown process to see where the slow spots are. If I see a system where UPHC Service has been installed and I ask "Why did you install this", the answer will be "Somebody told me it will help my slow log off time" and then I will ask "Did it help your slow log off time" and they will say "I don't think so". Then I will ask "What was your log off time before?" and the reply will be "I don't know, but it was way too long" I will then ask "What was your log off time after installing the UPHC Service?" and the reply will be "I don't know that either".That would be because nobody actually measured the logon and log off times with accuracy and compared the before and after times. Then I will measure how long their boot time is with the UPHC Service (and write it down and show it to them), then uninstall UPHC Service and measurethe boot time again without UPHC Service and you can see in the numbers that the system will boot faster without UPHC Service being installed for no reason. Then they owe me $5 since I charge $1 per second of time I shave off the "my computer takes too long to boot" systems ($50 maximum since it is usually only a few minutes of work to dramatically reduce the startup time). There is of course no charge if the boot time increases. If the system is slow to log off, installing UPHC Service is not the first thing. It doesn't make sense except under those condition described above. Instead of trying things, it makes more sense to troubleshoot the shutdown process and see what is happening in the process, find out what the hang up is, whey things are taking "too long" (whatever too long means) and then investigate those areas and do something about it.Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!

I'll let you guys handle that part!$5 isn't bad for a few seconds of effort and I can always count on at least $50.I'm just hoping to dispel the legend that UPHC Service will help things. If you actually try it and see if it helps or check the results, you will see what really happens and then you will never suggest it again.Sadly, I think I have even seen Microsoft Support Moderators sometimes suggest installing UPHC Service in their shotgun troubleshooting methods. I think that means they have no idea what the problem really is. Somebody needs to go back to school! Then if the thread goes idle, in about 5-10 days, the MSM reply will be marked as the answer. So if you are a MSM, and assuming answers somehow count favorably for you, it is in your best interest to reply to every thread with at least some kind of see if it helps, check the results offering. If nothing happens and the thread goes idle, you are guaranteed an answer credit. The mortals seem to have control of this thread for the moment though. If it goes idle, there will be no answer. Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!
