Is Windows 7 a upgraded version from Vista?
Hi, I and my boss disagree about the 7 being a upgrade. He says 7 is a upgrade like 95 to 98 and few other previous OS after those. But I says it isn't aupgrade from Vista, and it is has more new features and way above Vista to be consider Vista SE. Just to diffenert. But I do like Vista, I'm a Vista fan, but everyone else isn't a Vista fan like me at work. They don't care much for Vista. So please helps us out and be a techinal as possible. I work at a computer repair store (small bussiness) so be as techincal as possible. And let us know who is right.ThanksPS: Was Vista build from stractch from XPor did they make Vista from the very beginning? Same for 7 as well. Thanks -Windows Geek - 7 is better than any OS I have and never OWN!!!

hey there As the crazy man* at Microsoft said "Windows 7 is vista done right". I consider it a step up from vista, and not a "vista second edition". New features like the enhanced taskbar, new touch features, jump lists etc make it for moire advanced. and Correct me if I'm wrong, but Vista was originally coded from XP. (starting with the alpha bulids in the 3xxx range) It went on to the 4xxx bulids and thats when the intrest of "longhorn" really took shape but in late 2004/early 2005 it was scrapped and bulit from scratch using the Windows Server 2003 code base that started with the 5xxx bulid. *I'm only joking about the "crazy man", but youtube speaks for it self http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=steve+balmer+crazy&aq=0&oq=steve+balmer+cr No offense Mr Balmer

Windows Geek - For what it's worth - Windows 7 is more like XP was to Windows 2000 - a point upgrade. Windows 2000 = NT 5.0, Windows XP = NT 5.1, Vista = NT 6.0 and Win 7 is NT 6.1.Your boss is kinda right, in so far as Win 95 was Windows 4.0 and 98 was Windows 4.1. Vista is/was a fairly extensive rewrite of the NT kernal, the underlying code and such. The major changes include drivers were moved from the Kernal level to the user level, a new graphics subsystem, IE was sandboxed, and the list goes on. Win 7 doesn't add anything really earth shattering, it merely refines most of the features in Vista and makes them leaner, meaner and just plain faster and more stable. So in a sense, you're both right. It's not a service pack. It's a new version of the OS.

Windowsgeek -you should be aware that comparisons of all kinds depend from the "tertium comparationis" or the point you're interested in. If you compare Vista and Win7 in a more technical manner, interested in kernel architecture, human interface (UI operations) and such, you won't find THAT much differences - even if there are some. If you compare both from an average user's view, looking at speed, memory usage, system requirements and so on - even conceding that Vista got better with the time -, Win7 would be more than a "point upgrade". I can not truly say whether Win 7 is just a tweaked Vista or not. All I can say is that I have seen a few programs that will not install on Win 7 because they tell me that my "copy of Vista does not have Service Pack 1 installed" and that I will need SP1 installed before I can install the other software.

That smells like a problem that can easily be avoided by using the different Win7 compatibility modes. Right-click your program's "setup" or whatever, select "compatibility mode", select - for instance - "Vista SP1", and normally it should work. No guarantee, but try that before complaining. If it doesn't work, be free to put your experience here, someone might look for a solution.Mob. AMD64 3000+, 1 G RAM, Mob. ATIRadeon9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

TempMSN - That's only the case if you want to do an upgrade from Vista. You can always boot from the DVD and do a clean install.
