Hi I have a client with 4 machines a couple of laptops and a router that connects to the internet. There is one machine that can no longer access the internet. This is a machine running windows 7 Ultimate. It was Upgraded from XP->Vista->Win 7 over time. It was working well untill about a week ago when the internet was no longer accessable. System resore has no restore points Her last workstation backup was Feb 9th. There is no server on this network Neither DHCP nor hard IP configurations work There is no proxy set up in the Int opts. It works in safe mode. In diagnostics mode, I terminated any processes other than what safe mode showed and it still did not work Network Monitor shows only outgoing traffic and no incomming traffic. DNS is configured correctly as well as WINS. NetBios over TCPIP=Yes IP6 is turned off. It has Norton 360 installed but i shut it all off. Windows firewall is off including windows firewall service. You Name it, I have tried it! So what next? Any input is welcome. Thanks Jerry C

We've uninstalled and reinstalled the network drivers for both the wireless and the rj45 connection. Both fail. Thank you for the suggestions so far though! Much appreciated.

Hmm... we installed a different wireless adapter and that had the same problem. Also, both of them work in safe mode. Could that still be the issue?
May 11th, 2011 5:29pm

If they are working fine in safe mode, then it seems that he issue may be with any 3rd party software. Go to Msconfig in normal mode and then services , Check the box that says Hide all Microsoft service reboot the machine and see if that works. If that works then one by one keep on checking the other services and see which is the casue.

No it is nor normal. It seems that the machine is infected by TrojanProxy:Win32/Koobface.gen!A http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=TrojanProxy%3AWin32%2FKoobface.gen!A It may cause the following changes HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer = http=localhost:7070 HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer = http=localhost:7070 HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyOverride = *.local;<local> HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyOverride = *.local;<local> HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyEnable = 0x01 HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyEnable = 0x01

jwitalka, everything looks normal in there. PK, I went ahead and got rid of that entry, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. Also, ProxyEnable was set to 0. Looking at the registry now, it doesn't appear as though any of those others are there.

What Antivirus program you are using?
May 13th, 2011 8:47am

When I check the Hide all Microsoft Services box, there's nothing left there. We've stopped/disable a lot of services over the past week trying to get it running only the 23 processes that run in Safe Mode when the browser works. And even then it still doesn't work. Something else worth noting... I ran a HijackThis scan earlier to see what it would come up with, and while most of the results seem unlikely to be the cause, one of the entries that came up says this: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local;*.local Is that normal?

Hi All @Juke Ping and its DNS works. i can ping google and get a response including its ip address. i can ping the gateway (router) as well i cannot access the router's html page. The router is the gateway and has the same subnet as the problem computer. We also tried to access a private site on the web using port 5801 and that did not work either. It should be noted that we have IE8 (brand new re-installation) google chrome, and firefox as web browsers @Alora (who's pc we are talking about) Someone at my work suggested to try to TelNet a site using port 80. Run to a command prompt Type 'Telnet google.com 80' If you get a blank screen, Type X and then press enter. You should get some html code for an error page. Try it for different .coms you should get different error pages. @P_K we have completely removed the antivirus in this debug process. Thanks to everyone. Jerry

Hi, Can all of the software not access the Internet? Have you tried to ping a public DNS name? Please try to ping it. Also, try to ping the gateway to see whether the connectivity is good. In addition, check the ARP table in the cache. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Okay, we ran a full scan in safe mode with both Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes but neither found anything. (She had Norton 360 before as her antivirus but it was uninstalled a couple days ago to be sure the problem with some setting somewhere hidden in there.) Is there any program in particular you recommend doing a scan with?
May 15th, 2011 3:31am

No there is nothing specfic that we need as far as AV is concerned. Is it possible for you to map the drives of this computer from any other machine that is working fine and then run a scan on the drives

No solution presented has worked Therefore we decided to reformat and start with a fresh windows install. Thanks for all your suggestions. Please do not mark any answers as the answer as this would mislead anyone else seeking an answer to a similar situation. Thank You all Jerry C

Hi Juke I have an honest question for you. Why is it so importnt for you to have this thread as answered? The truth of the matter is that everything that was suggested by PK and others has been tried and none of them have solved the problem. So at the time of this post, this thread is unresolved. It is important not to mislead others looking into this thread. All the ideas sugested as solutions are good ideas but in my particular case, they did not solve the issue. My goal in this post is to preserve the integrity of the meaning forum's answer tag. Thank You Jerry Cici
