Internet gateway device loads on Norton install but won't let the AV online!
I have a Dell Dimension 4700 that I have recently had to make wireless. It runs XP Home SP3. I had a heck of a time getting the wireless card to work, but I did eventually (driver conflict). The issue now is that through my ISP I have a free subscription to Norton AV suite. It downloads and installs but will not register or connect to get the .dat file updates (live update). It will do scans and the firewall and everything. The internet works flawlessly, even going to the Symantec homepage. The issue seems to be the fact that Norton is causing an "Internet Gateway" to appear in the network devices. This is in addition to my wireless card. When I disable the gateway, it kills the internet, even though the wireless card is still showing as being connected. Uninstall the Norton, the gateway disappears and the wireless works fine. I use WZC to handle the wireless card and networks. It works fine unless the gateway is disabled. As stated before, the only issue is that the Norton AV will not connect to the internet! I spent 3 hours with Symantec today doing everything from turning off theinternet gateway device discovery and control client, clearing caches, flushing DNS, you name IT! Any ideas? Thanks in advance,Qchair 1 person needs an answerI do too

I did clean the Norton off. I was testing it to see if it was an upgrade from their earlier offering. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea WHY a program (NORTON AV Suite) would cause MS XP Home SP3 to turn on Internet Gateway and Discovery ONLY for THAT programs use only, and it not affect the other internet connection devices. I thought this being a MS answers site and all that there might be some expertise in the IGAD system. Please excuse the post!

HiThis is my personal take on the general issue.--------------------The differences between the top security suits are minute. Each one might miss something when tested, but in general they provide similar protection. As long as a person uses a single computer connected directly to the Internet it does not matter much which one is used. The problem of using 3rd party security suits stems from their difficulties (lack of flexibility) to handle variety of Networking situations. If you spend time on Computer's Networking Forums you will amazed by the number of users that in order to have a functional LAN and Internet connection have to Uninstall the 3rd party suits, and clean their computers from the residual running processes of the security suits.--------------The First level of protection with Broadband Internet connection is using a Cable/DSL Router, even if the Network is comprised of one computer. The Router's NAT Firewall & SPI providing very good inbound protection. The Router’s WAN side also takes care the ISP connection's authentication, thus keeps the connection always alive. On each Networked computers running Windows Vista/Win 7 use the Advanced native software Firewall, and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials as AV and Antispyware applications.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentialsIt all working smooth, on both Cable Internet and DSL, maintaining very good Internet/Network security, without adding any cost to each computer.I configured many computers on peer-to-peer networks with security configured as described above, many of them are Giga LANs, and they all working very well and secure, achieving LAN transfers up to 70MB/sec. (B=Byte). The only time that I deviate from this, routine is when it is essential to get Visual feedback during Internet/Network activities and actively control any application that tries to connect to the Internet. In such cases I usually disable Windows native Firewall, and use PCTools Firewall, it is free, small, and minimally intrusive Software Firewall. Thank you for you input. I am running a WRT54G Linksys router after the cable modem. I am not familiar with the cable modem as it is new, but the Linksys works well. I have 3 laptops, the desktop we were discussing, and a home server on this set up. I was running McAfee on all the computers, but had decided to test out the Norton as it was free and supposedly an improvement from their 360 offering. It has to be the third party AV software causing he issue, as when I remove it the Internet Gateway and Discover Service disappears again. Only thing I can figure is their software is causing some networking conflict like you described. I will look into the PC tools firewall. I used Sygate for years, but the McAfee had one included that worked well. Thanks again.
