Internet doesn't work most of the time

I have occasionally been able to connect, but when I do, the internet is very slow. Does anyone have any ideas?Win XP Home EditionUsing Google Chrome (Tried IE, doesn't work either)1 person needs an answerI do too

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer forErrors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48hours ago.You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaningof the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Descriptionare important.A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and doubleclick on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is abutton resembling two pages. Click the button and close EventViewer. Now start your message and do a paste into the body ofthe message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting fromEvent Viewer. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I have hijackthis, but that was after the internet problem.
December 6th, 2010 6:49pm

Recent versions of HijackThis have come from Trend, who acquired the software from the original developer some time ago. It is not possible to determine when the comment on EventID.net was put there.http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/Have you refrained from installing Windows Search? What browser are you using?Do you have both Bing and Google on your system? Which is your default search engine? Do you have Google Chrome installed?Pleasse note the two errors may not be part of the same problem.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I'm not sure if I have Windows Search. Is there a way that I could find it? I am using ChromeJust GoogleThank you for all of your help!

Select Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs. I would uninstall and reinstall Google Chrome.Windows Desktop Search 4 also appears in Add / Remove Programs. Reading of the problems it caused I never installed it on my Windows XP computer. I would uninstall and revert to the original search engine. Note Windows Desktop Search 3 from reports never appeared in Add / Remove Programs and another approach was needed.http://www.davidarno.org/2008/08/22/how-to-remove-windows-desktop-seagupdaterch-...-revisited/Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Already going slow, or not at all. It was going fast for about 2 minutes before that. Could it be a virus?

Try the solution in this link:http://www.ehow.com/how_6810826_uninstall-windows-search-4_0-xp.htmlWhen reverting to the original search engine you may not see an immediate improvement in performance. I suspect (but do not know) that the indexing service will need to index files again and this can take several days making the system slow during that time. Even without having installed Windows Desktop search, if the user turned off the Indexing service and subsequently turns it back on you have this period whilst the system rebuilds the file index.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I think you will find Windows Search 3 is more of the same, just a little less advanced and less bulky. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

As I said in my previous post I think the problem is Windows Desktop search be it version 3 or 4.You may be able to isolate the problem by disabling Windows Desktop Search to prevent it from starting. If you still see the problem you will need to look for something else.To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware fromMicrosoft).http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspxWith Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it fromstarting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If youuncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much saferapproach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click anitem and select Search Online to get information about the itemselected. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I am not able to find Win Des Search in the Autorun What is it called?
December 9th, 2010 11:41am

In Autoruns it's on the Services tab towards the end of the list showing as Wsearch. Disable it (do not delete it) and test to see what impact disabling has on system performance. You need to confirm you have identified that it is the cause of your poor system performance. My feeling is that then the best way would be look at what is being indexed as it could be that it is indexing information that is not needed. If the configuration were to be changed then you might perhaps be able to take advantage of what Windows Search offers without experiencing the heavy drain on system resources.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Looked at what was being indexed. You were correct, it was indexing information that wasn't needed. I put a stop to that and also disabled the WDS. Restarted PC. Still no internet.

When the Internet works, the speed is 298 kb a sec and when it doesn't I can't even take the speed test. Sorry I took so long to respond.
