Internet connectivity issues LAN on Vista Home Premium 32-bit
I use my wireless connection all the time and all at sudden needed the LAN but it is not working. It stays in the" identifying" stage with no outcome. I found some similar issues around with no real solutions available. One of the most extensive descriptions is here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/bc08f0e7-49a9-4458-9e0e-149b2df362ec but nothing seemed to work for that post and neither for my situation. I still get access with my WLAN. Please help!

Please try to re-install the LAN network card driver and check if this solve your problem or not. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

I have done that already. Did not work. Tried with both the one that "came" with the computer and the one downloaded directly. No difference, same outcome: still identifying forever

Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address" are checked in the Internet Protocole Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties (I mean make sure that you don't have static addresses fixed) This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

things attempted Tried to let Windows automatically diagnose and repair the problem IPConfig /Release and IPConfig /Renew NetSH Int IP Reset NetSH WinSock Reset SFC /ScanNow Uninstalled the drivers for the NIC and wireless adapter, then reinstalled and tested them separately Resetting the router to default settings Added DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle to my Registry Disabled IPv6 Static I.P., subnet, and Default Gateway System Restore to many different points before this problem occured Did a malware scan with Everything (MS Essentials, SBS&D, AdAware, etc) Temporarily disabled Windows Firewall Rebooted a million times in normal, clean boot and safe mode with networking Prevent NCSI from Communicating Across the Internet by Changing a Registry Setting Only my wireless connection is still working but not the LAN.

Tried that too. It gets an IP address that is in the form of 169.254.XX.XX which I read is related to an internal address that serves as a dummy in case it does not find an IP. I've tried also assigning all of the addresses manually from what I assign when using my router but still the same outcome

Try to fix a static ip address and check the result. Are you able to connect with another computer using LAN connection? This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

I don't have a possible resolution now. It is possible that you've got a hardware problem. You can proceed by a repair install and check if this solve the problem or not. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

What I find to be weird is the possible "hardware problem" happened overnight with no apparent reason other than updates from MS

I "hardware problem" may appear at any time. If you suspect that there is a MS update that caused the issue, you can proceed by uninstalling windows updates. http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-uninstall-Windows-Vista-updates This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

It seems a little odd that a lot of people have a very similar problem and have had the same sort of frustration as I had in the past few days.... Just to give the people some ideas, I even tried flashing the BIOS with the drivers from HP (cause it was suggested in a different forum) but still nothing... Next step: get a USB ethernet adapter and if it works> great... If not, return it the same day and live with the idea I can only get wireless internet on my laptop.
