Internet connectivity - cable unplugged
Hello, I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 which shows 'cable unplugged' message when trying to connect to the internet. Needless to say, I have swapped cables for known-good and message persists. As in other posts I have manually altered the adapter settings to 100mbps with full-duplex - no difference. There is nothing in the BIOS that would disable the adapter and I have turned off power-saving features. The adapter has been uninstalled and re-installed - same. I have re-built the ipstack - same. Now here's the interesting bit - I installed a USB adapter so that I could gain internet access to check for a driver update and the USB adapter gave me the same message. So the problem is not a physical problem with the on-board adapter and must be software related. The system has AVG internet security which was disabled during the tests. The system was recently updated with SP1 and further updates since. I have rolled back the system prior to SP1 now and no difference. Running out of options here - anyone have any ideas ? Cheers, JimJ Chambers

“A network cable is unplugged” is an issue with the Internet connection. If your connection is disabled then you might face this error. You need to open ‘Network Connections’ from the ‘Control Panel’ on your Windows OS. You could view different available Internet connections on this page. If your broadband connection shows a status of ‘Disabled’, then right click on the icon. Choose ‘Enable’ from the menu to reinstate the connection. http://router.iyogi.com/home-network/network-cable-unplugged.html http://supportforlenovo.iyogi.com/thinkpad-t410/wireless-problem-60.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910389

Thanks Thomas - I had already tried that of course - forgot to include that in my list of tasks stated above. The links provide no further suggestions than I have already tried. I have since had a temporary connection with my USB adapter after uninstalling multiple isatap adapters in device manager (show hidden devices). Each time I restart the laptop these appear - what might be generating them ? This seems to be a the core of the issue now. Having diabled the ipv6 client in the adapter settings, this appears to make no difference. isatap adapters keep appearing. I've tweaked the registry also to disable ipv6 but still they appear. The USB adapter appears to be working ok now - just cannot get the on-board device to work. Regards, JimJ Chambers

Begiining to think this is now a severe infection. I'm a technician and have a similar problem with another machine, that has just been wiped after a bad infection. It has the same issue - 'cable unplugged'. I have not seen this before - and two occurrences in two days is probably not coincidence. Will update if I find a solution. You should also confirm your computer is connected to working router/switch port, sometimes the problem can due to faulty network port, so you might try to connect to other router/switch port and see how it goes. If you need more ideas, you can also use this ping tool to troubleshoot this network problem. Hope this helps.

Solution Found this on another forum that worked for me. Power down the laptop and remove both the battery and the power lead. Leave for at least 30 minutes and then retry. Hey presto - it's back. Can't believe the simplest of things can fix something so severe like this ! Cheers JimJ Chambers
