Internet connection with WindowsXP, SP3 and Airport Extreme - The status is always "acquiring network address"
My Airport Extreme connected my IMac immediately but I am not able to connect the PC side. The Airport Utility does not find "any Airport wireless devices". When checking the internet connection status with PC tools, the proper network is indicated and shows an excellent signal strength. The status is : "acquiring network address". However, nothing hapens.Under "Repair wireless network connection" it shows, "Windows is taking the following action: Renewing your IP address" Again, nothing happens.Under hardware I show Atheros Wireless Network Adapter and the notation: "This device is working properly"Still, no network connection. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi argentabec, What type of security are you using, is it WEP, WPA, or WPA2?Step 1:a. Open Airport Utility.b. Click on the Internet Connection Sharing tab and place a checkmark on "Share a public IP address".Step 2:If the issue still persists, uninstall the Airport utilityon the computer and connect through Windows Zero Configuration.a. Uninstall the Airport utility on the computer.b. Click on Start, click on Run, type services.msc in the Run box.c. On the Services window, look for Windows Zero Configuration service, right click on the service and then start it.d. Now, check for the issue.Regards, Manasa P – Microsoft Support.

Jack: I removed Airport utility and tried Windows Zero Config.I also tried your link info. Disabling firewall had no effect.'Computer Management' shows: "Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter" and "Acquiring network Address" under 'Network Connections'"1394 Net Adapter" and "Connected, Firewalled" under 'Network Connnections""Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)" and "Disconnected" under "Under Properties for Atheros I get "Working Properly"Under TCP/IP properties:"Obtain an IP address and DNS automatically" are both checked.Windows Zero Config. shows a status of "Started". I also tried Refresh and Restart. Nothing changed. I still show "Acquiring network address".I am using WPA2 Personal security.Help.

HiKeep the changes and open the Wireless. I.e., disable the security in the Router (enable it when to succeeded to connect). You can also try the Wireless in a friends house, or Internet cafe to get a frame of reference of it behavior elsewhere.-------------------Wireless in general.Go over these steps and tell us where the breaking point is.Check the Device Manager for valid Wireless card entry.http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_dm.jpgIf there is No valid entry, delete any Bogus Entry, and re-install the Wireless card's Drivers.Check the Network connections to make sure that you have a Wireless Network Connection Icon/Entry, and that the Properties of the Icon (right click on the Icon) are correctly configured with TCP/IPv4 protocol in the Network Connections Properties.http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_connection_tcp.jpg------------------Many Wireless cards' drivers also install the vendor's Wireless utility.Make sure that if there is a vendor's Wireless Utility thes Not Running together with the Windows native Wireless utility (WLAN Service) .----------------Make sure that No Firewall is preventing/blocking the Wireless components to get to the Network. Some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, otherwise totally uninstall it, and get rid of its residual processes to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .3rd party Network mangers like Bonjour, and NetMagic can block local traffic too.---------------------------Working TCP/IP stack should look this way.Right click on the Wire card Network Connection, choose Status, Details, and see if it got an IP and the rest of the settings.http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/status-nic.jpgDescription is the card manufacturing data.Physical address is the card's MAC number. The xx should be a number from 0 to 255 (all xx same number).yy should be from 0 to 255zz should be from 0 to 255 (all zz the same number. The lease date should be valid to the current time.*Note 1. IP that starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is not valid functional IP.*Note 2. There might be an IPv6 entries too. However, they are not functional for Internet traffic or LAN. They are needed for Win 7 special HomeGroup configuration.---------------------------------------------------A message in the Wireless little Window that says Connected does not means that your are really have a valid functional connection. If everything above is OK you have to be able to connect to the Router.Connecting to the Router means that you can enter the Router's core IP into an address bar of a browse, be able to connect, see, and configure the Router's menus. If it does not connecting to the Router, log from any computer that can connect to Wireless Router with a Wire, disable the Wireless Security, make sure that the Wireless broadcast SSID is On, and try to connect with No Wireless security.Enable the Wireless security after you mange to establish a functional connection. Tried your suggestions. The Device Manager shows the Atheros AR928X wireless network adapter.Under Network Connections I get "This device is working properly". It then suggests using the Troubleshooter which gets as far as this message: "Windows is taking the following action: Renewing your IP address". Nothing happens.Under Network Connections Details, I have: DHCP Enabled: YesAdvanced TCP/IP Settings: Optional Settings: "TCP/IP Filtering", "Permit All"WINS: Enable LM Hosts LookupNet Bios Setting: "Default: Use NetBios Setting from the DHCP Server" DNS: DNS server addresses, in order of use: (This is Blank) Under Network Connection Status, I get: STATUS: "Acquiring Network Address": Network: (This is blank); Speed: 33.0 MBPS; Signal Strength: "Strong"; Activity: (Both Sent and Received are equal and working); Packets: Same for Sent and ReceivedI have tried to make connection after disabling the Apple firewall but this didn't help either.I now have another new problem. When I log on to the PC side of the IMac, I get a "Log on to WindowsXP" box. I've never gotten this before. My user name is shown but when I use what I believe is my password, it doesn't connect but gives me a bad password pop-up box. It also gives me no way to find my password and of course I have no internet connection. My only way to disconnect is by pulling the plug. Then, If I try to turn on the computer in the Mac mode (by just pressing the start button), it goes back to the PC side automatically. This is not proper. The usual method to connect to the PC side is to hold down the Option key while pressing the ON button. After several disconnects, I can finally get the computer to return to the Mac by pressing the start-up button. The same sign-in box keeps coming up for the PC side. Help
