Internet connection not established on boot; occasional loss
Shortly after installing Win 7 (RTM, 32-bit) I found I could not connect to the Internet. Worked for a while then stopped. However, LAN connection to server and printers was (and remains) fine. If I boot the machine with the network cable plugged in the LAN connection gets estabalished but not to the Internet. If I boot with the cable unplugged, after the boot completes (and I have the little PC network icon with a red X through it), I can plug in the cable ... and both the LAN and then Internet connections get set up fine! If I boot with the cable in and don't get the Internet connection, unplugging the cable (giving the red X again) and then plugging back the LAN cable only gives me the LAN; no Internet. Icon then has a yellow warning symbol. I've tried "repairing" the connection with nothing coming of it. Other machine (server) on the LAN works fine with the Internet even when the Win 7 machine is having these problems.Mostly the problem happens at boot time, but sometimes I'll just lose the Internet connection. LAN still works and the yellow warning icon appears, though. Unplugging and replugging the cable to the network switch doesn't fix it.

Hi, To make the issue clear, could you please provide more information about the topology of your network? Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Update the NIC driver and see how it works. 2. If this computer is connecting to a router, please also upgrade the routers firmware. 3. Plug the network cable, boot the computer to Safe Mode with networking and see if the issue persists. 4. If there are some other clients on the network, please also check if the issue also occurs on them. If the issue persists, please also collect the following information for our further research: Run ipconfig /all when the issue occurs and the issue doesnt occur and paste the results to this thread. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

1) Windows says I have the current driver.2) We'll see about this. Router seems fine. Once I get the connection it stays up until I reboot. Network works fine between other computers and others all do fine with Internet when the Win 7 machine won't connect.3) I'll try the Safe Mode tip.4) Issue does NOT happen with other machines. When I first installed Win 7 (Ultimate) this didn't happen. A few days later it started. If I boot with the LAN cable to the switch (which is then connected to a cable router) disconnected, then plug in the LAN cable after logging in to Win 7 the network icon changes from a red "X" to the "busy" icon to a yellow warning (after it gets a LAN connection" and then to the normal icon when the Internet connection is established. I'v also found that disabling and reenabling the NIC via System>Device Manager will usually (not always; might take 2 or 3 times) get the connection going. Trying the "repair" function has not worked once.I'll get the two ipconfig dumps. Thanks for your assistance.BTW, I see other mentiuons of connection problems in the forum, too.

Hello, This same problem has shown up with a new install of Win7 32bit also. Only these same symptoms appear using a wifi adapter rather than a wired nic. Microsoft Compatibility web site lists the wifi adapter as "working with the device manufacturer". I think many of these issues are" new software - old hardware" related. Still, it is very discouraging to migrate from something which worked all the time (WinXP and the old hardware), not to mention paid for, to something supposedly better. Only to have to shell out lots more money and countless hours dealing with the problem. It is odd the network cards will connect to the network, but are refused the internet connection. Something seems to disrupt the ability to connect with the internet the moment Win7 restarts. After a clean install of the adapters drivers, the connection is usually made. However it is "always" when the computer reboots that the internet connection fails. We have a newer Win7 64bit laptop which has no problems at all with the wifi internet connection. It connects to the same router the above wifi adapter card uses, but the laptop is newer hardware. I will post the IP Config with the failed connection right after I : Reboot (internet connection will have failed) Check IP Config Uninstall wifi network adapter. Reinstall wifi network adapter. I'm very hopeful a simple setting somewhere in Win7 will remedy this, but experience has taught me many of these problems exist to create more sales for hardware and software folks.....we'll see. Thank you Nicholas Li for investing your time with these troubled users.
