Internet connection issues. (Spontanious disconnects.)
I've been fighting with this problem since I got my Vista PC a year ago. Now that I have two Vista PC's... my problems have doubled.I've been through every hardware fix there is. I've been through four different routers and two seperate modems. I've tried modifying ports, changing firewalls, turning firewalls off, not running / uninstalling programs that the problem seemed to occur with during use.I've had tech support from countless people from my intenet company to the companies that made the routers I've used. None of them who could solve my connection problems. When I finally narrowed the problem down to my modem or Vista... I took the moden in to exchange it for a new one. I was told that my specific modem was out of date, and wasn't compatable with my current internet connection. Which was frustrating to hear, after having talked to five different techs and giving them my modem number and model and not hearing a word about incompatability. Indeed... they all blamed my router. After installing this new modem, my connection is indeed exceptionally quicker and more fluid. However, I've already disconnected twice, and I've only had the new modem for a day.I'm using a combination of wired and wireless... though the wireless upgrade is not the problem. None of the computers on the network are wireless and I only upgraded to wireless a month ago.I read on some forum somewhere that Vista has a problem where it gives itself permission to shut down your internet connection if the OS believes your connection is taking up too much bandwith. This might be my problem... but I cannot be sure. The internet will disconnect in many different scenarios. It can disconnect while I am just browsing the web, lightly using my 10meg bandwith. It can also disconnect while my computers are not directly, not through any action of mine, connected to the internet. Also, the internet is almost 100% sure to disconnect if I turn on a P2P networking program - no matter the bandwith I let the program use... the constant connection will cause it to trip whatever is causing my connection to fail and I will loose internet access. My home network itself is flawless and never wavers. I can access my other computers, send files between, and print even when the internet connection fails. The problem will very rarely fix itself, and when it goes out for just a couple minutes I'm not sure that is even the same problem. Usually the internet will be down until I do one of three things.Restart the computers. Powercycle the router, or powercycle the modem. Sometimes restarting the PC's fixes the problems, other times I have to unplug the router, or unplug the modem.I read somewhere that there was a patch you could get from Microsoft, but only if you could prove to them that Vista specifically was your problem.

Hi TrueProphecy22, I am not quite understand the following sentence in your post: I'm using a combination of wired and wireless... though the wireless upgrade is not the problem. None of the computers on the network are wireless and I only upgraded to wireless a month ago. Is the Windows Vista computers using wireless or wired connection now? I think it should be an important information for this issue, so please help to clarify it. Meanwhile, please boot into Safe Mode with Network to check if the issue occurs. If it doesnt, please refer to the following KB article to perform a clean boot in order to find out the culprit. How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 If it is a laptop, please check if the resolution in the following KB article is helpful: You may experience connectivity issues or performance issues when you connect a mobile PC that is running Windows Vista to a wireless access point http://support.microsoft.com/?id=928152 I look forward to your reply.

I have the exact same problem. I had a laptop with this issue and then had to upgrade my desktop due to a system crash. Ever since, BOTH computers have internet connection dropouts. I have found countless forums with the same problem and it is never fixed. The problem does seem to be with bandwidth. In the issue, any "running" downloads (streaming radio/video, etc.) continue to download until finished and then connection closes. I too have tried all of the fixes I can find and nothing. Scanned the router using Vista compatability tool and it came back compatible although Unpnp and Ipv6 were not supported. Any ideas?
