Internet connection intermittent after configured DNS servers don't respond
This is a wired connection to a cable internet provider. Log shows Error 1014. "Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded." The domain name varies. After a few minutes (usually five, sometimes less) the connection is restored. I have been dealing with this problem daily since Windows Vista and in Windows 7. (all Beta, RTM, RC and final versions). Something is not right. Once, one Microsoft person did offer to look at network traces related to this; I did not hear back anything. Other than that, Microsoft does not acknowledge any issue. They just point the finger at your ISP. I would like to hear if anyone else sees this and has found any way to correct it. As I understand it, it never happens with Windows XP systems. Please don't respond with suggestions about "safe mode" and "clean boot". It is a waste of my time and yours.

You do have an unusual situation and I would suspect you have a hardware problem causing this. Maybe the system memory, especially if you are using the same hardware you did with XP. Vista and Win 7 handle memory a little different than XP did and I have seen more than one person find problems with their system memory after going from XP to Vista or Win 7. What ever is causing it, it is your environment casuing the problem; DRAM, CPU, hard drive, motherboard, etc. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. It is hard for me to understand how a hardware issue ( "environment" ) can cause the DNS service to not respond, considering that my system is running perfectly fine in every other respect. I don't think this is that unusual a situation. I see several other threads that describe this issue also. In most of those case, the system must be rebooted. I don't have to do that. The timeout is 5 minutes. OK I take back the " perfectly fine " part. Sleep does not work properly. But I never use sleep so that is a separate issue I have learned to avoid.

I tried it both ways, with the registry edit and with the security policy change to turn off the feature. The NETWORK SERVICE still tries to contact dns.msftncsi.com. Meanwhile the DNS will also time out on other random web addresses.

The ipconfig report shows no difference during and after a timeout. Also I have noted that often this problem will occur if I return to the computer, after stepping away for 15-30 minutes, or more. I often have an internet radio stream running. As soon as I click IE explorer link, the music stops, and the internet hangs. Perhaps, it goes like this: after failure to connect, Windows does the dns probe to see if connectivity is good. ( It shouldn't since I turned this feature OFF. ) Since I lost my link, the DNS lookup fails, and an error is logged. After five minutes, the timeout goes off and all connectivity is restored. I don't get a one-to-one error log record for each hang. Just now the PC got hung, but no corresponding DNS timeout error log appeared. So maybe it is not the DNS service per se that is failing. Something else is going wrong. Also if I get a hang, it is likely that another hang will occur a few minutes later. In other words, it is a somewhat bursty problem.

My brother just bought a brand spankin' new Dell Workstation With Window 7 64-bit. I am helping him set it up. So of course I look in the Error Log. Right off the bat the system has started to log this error 1014 ...none of the configured DNS Servers responded. The TCP is exactly as installed by Dell. Now I am waiting to see if he notices any hangs/timeouts and complains to me about it.
