Internet Sharing Issues - Errors 1068 & 1717
I have been trying for days to get my XBox to share my laptop's internet connection. I know that this is possible because I have done it before, & with Vista. Now, I am unable to checkmark "Allow other users..." for sharing etc. I get the error that Internet Connection Sharing failed because "the dependency service or group failed to start." Well I found out that it was dependent on the service "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager", so I tried to start that. (It is also dependent on Telephony, but that is running). Same error. I find out that THAT is dependent on "Remote Access Connection Manager". When I try to start THAT, I get the same error. It is dependent on "Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service", which is not dependent on anything. When I try to get THAT service to start, I always get the error 1717: Interface is unknown. I have been trying for days & days to fix this. I am ready to throw Vista out of the Window & reinstall XP, seriously. I have done a clean start-up, & am still not able to get these certain services running. These are my last-ditch efforts, & then Vista is gone for good for me. I have done wayyyy too much troubleshooting on this os. I have been searching & searching & there are no definite answers out there for this problem, just unanswered questions. If you can help, I'd be very grateful...not to mention impressed! Thanks in advance. ~rk

Hi, Firstly, may I know when did the issue start to occur? Is it after some special changes? Before going any longer, please check the following: 1. Install the latest device driver for the NIC. 2. Make sure that you have 2 network interfaces. For more information, please refer to the following webpage: Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/bfd3bd31-82f0-4b9c-9cde-fb92bc2b14771033.mspx To make the issue clear, please also collect the following information: 1. Is this computer in a domain or a workgroup environment? 2. Please check the event log to see if there are any related error messages. At this time, please try the following suggestions: 1. Perform an online scan with the OneCare Online Scanner. ==================================== 1) Proceed to http://safety.live.com then click on the yellow button "Full Service Scan". 2) Click Accept on the Service Agreement. 3) Click "Install Now" button. NOTE: If installation is unsuccessful, click on the information bar below the address bar then click "Install ActiveX Control" 4) When a Security Warning dialog box appears, asking you if you want to install the Windows Live Safety Center Component scanner, please click Install. 5) Click on "Launch Scanner" button. 6) A secondary windowpane opens up titled Full Service Scan. a. Click on Next to proceed with the complete scan. b. A progress bar will appear showing the status of the scanning tools while its downloading. c. A Status: Scanning your computer appears with - Virus and spyware scan - Registry Cleaner Scan - Disk Cleanup scan - Disk Fragmentation Scan - Open Ports scan - Computer information d. After the scan, click on Next on the summary page. e. Status Window: Fixing process will start. f. Summary page will appear. Click on Next. NOTE: Share information with Microsoft has a check by default. g. Uploading report with Microsoft will proceed. h. You will see a message "Scan is Done." 2. This issue can also be caused by the factor that some third party software conflicts with the service, please perform a Clean Boot to check our issue. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check the services again to see if it helps. 3. Our issue can be caused by the incorrect security setting, please reset the security settings with the following steps: Note: Please perform a full system backup first. 1) Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 2) Type the following command, and then press ENTER: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. For more information about this message, view the %windir%\Security\Logs\Scesrv.log file. Note: In Windows Vista, the defltbase.inf file is a Security configuration template for the default security. You can view the settings for this file in the following location: %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf And, for more information, please refer to the following Knowledge Base: How to reset security settings back to the defaults http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;313222 4. Regarding the error 1068, it means The dependency service or group failed to start. Based on this situation, please check dependencies of the ICS service one by one to see if any error receives and post the information about which service fails and what error is received to the thread. Here are the ICS service dependencies: Base Filtering Engine DCOM Server Process Launcher Network Connections Network Store Interface Service Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Remote Access Connection Manager Telephony Plug and Play Windows Management Instrumentation Note: Please also check the dependencies of the failed services of the list above and let me know the detail information. If the issue persists, please make sure that all the updates have been applied and also try to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur. Thanks!
