Internet Printing client on Windows 7 Starter
I added many Linux and XP PC to my linux printserver running CUPS by adding an internet printer - http:/server-name:631/printers/printname. I tried this on the Windows 7 Starter netbook and got a message that it unable to connect. I search the MS Help and support and came across this :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969708/EN-US Which says it applies to Windows 7 Starter but the option of "Internet Printing Client" doesn't appear - the only service under the Print Services option is the "Fax and Scan" option. Any suggestions.

Hi, You've sort of answered ny question but not directly - is the Internet Printing Client not available in Windows 7 starter? Can it be addded? It isn't listed as one of the things missing on the MS comparisons and is rather silly as the IPP client has been included on all MS OS since win 2000.

Hi Io1901, I would like to answer you that the Internet Printing Client is not available in Windows 7 Starter and it could not be added. The option only lists on higher version of Windows 7 machine. I'm sorry for the inconvenience the article has caused and our feedback team will modify it as soon as possible. Thanks, Novak

I need IPP printing to be available for Windows 7 starter as well. Has anyone found a viable workaround for this yet? Regards, Aaron Ball

Yes, I also verified that the IPP client is disabled in Windows 7 Starter, which is the edition that you will have on your netbook when you go to a public network (Internet Cafe, etc) to print! Currently, the only way to enable it is to do the instant upgrade to a higher edition of Windows 7. We put in an enhancement request to get this added back to the Starter edition in the next service pack, but Microsoft needs more input from others on this before they see that there is a need. http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Feedback.aspx?formID=195

I'm at a school which has a Linux IPP printing system and I can't use my primary computer--which has Windows 7 Starter--to print here. It's a real hassle, and I can attest that there's definite need for a patch. While we wait for the bureaucracy, is there any third party client to enable IPP?

You can enable cups-lpd on the Linux box; windows 7 starter can use that protocol. (I just did that)

After buying a new printer yesterday I successfully set up two Win 7 PC's up to print to it using internet printing. Then I came to set up my netbook following exactly the same procedure and got the "windows couldn't connect to the printer" message. After wasting several fruitless hours I eventually found the absence of "Internet Printing Client" in Windows 7 Starter to be the cause. I don't know if this was an oversight or deliberate, but I think it is wrong to exclude it. If deliberate then it should be made crystal clear to anyone thinking of purchasing Win 7 Starter. Since it probably not easy to explain such a technical limitation in a few words at the time of pruchase I really think it should be included. I also think this is likely to become an issue more frequently for the following reason. I have fairly recently contracted two separate ADSL services from two different major ISPs (Vodafone and Orange). Both of these now supply as standard routers into which USB printers directly so that they can be shared by all computers in the network using "Internet Printing Client". I believe that other market leading ISPs now do likewise. Anyone with more than one computer in their home or small office is likely to choose to share their printer using the router rather than sharing it via a dedicated computer. It is also wasteful of energy to have to switch on another computer just so that it can share its printer to the computer you are working on, rather then printing to the router to which you are already connected. I already own three licenced copies of Win 7 Home Premium (plus several copies of XP Pro, XP Home and earlier versions). I don't think I should have to pay to upgrade my netbook just to be able to print. Can you advise whether "Internet Printing Client" is or wil be included in a Win 7 Starter update. Thank you
