Internet Explorer 9.0 crashes constantly under Windows 7 SP1 32-bit
We have a problem on many computers running Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 SP1 Professional 32-bit whereby Internet Explorer will crash when accessing certain websites, one such website is the MSN homepage http://uk.msn.com/?ocid=iefvrt. This problem can also be exemplified if one starts typing text for which to search in http://www.google.co.uk/. Internet Explorer will crash with the error message detailed below. The error occurs for many of our users in the school and I can determine no logical reason for why it starts occurring; obviously there is some event which is causing it to happen but I cannot isolate this. If a user profile is deleted then Internet Explorer will function as normal (i.e. not crash) for a (undefined) period of time, but then Internet Explorer will start crashing again. Not all sites cause Internet Explorer to crash but I should estimate that more than 70 per cent do so, but I cannot determine any connection between those that do. I am currently able to demonstrate this problem as a Domain Administrator on a test computer that has the same image as our curriculum computers, but the other users that experience this problem are normal domain accounts with roaming profiles. I am also able to demonstrate this problem using a particular roaming user. I have uninstalled Flash, Shockwave and Java. I have also run Internet Explorer with the –extoff switch and the crash can still be effected. Obviously, I can clear the crash by deleting the user profile, but the crash will start occurring sporadically afterwards. Due to the intermittent nature of this problem, I should like to get to the bottom of it. Please find details of the crash below: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: iexplore.exe Application Version: 9.0.8112.16421 Application Timestamp: 4d76255d Fault Module Name: msvcrt.dll Fault Module Version: 7.0.7600.16385 Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bda6f Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00009cc6 OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48 Locale ID: 2057 Additional Information 1: ec73 Additional Information 2: ec73ff0af4bbb55f1036dbe9dee48ab3 Additional Information 3: 3fc9 Additional Information 4: 3fc9876e20a2dbe31b51b8a5aac9842b

hmmm... Do you have any IE Add-ons running? sometimes some bad BHOs will cause all kinds of problems. I was going to also suggest a flash issue but I see you already tried that. Make sure you are getting the latest v11 from Adobe. Other than that the last thing I can think of is some sort of operating system file (the msvcrt.dll in your crash report) that can cause this.Thank you! Computer Repair Kissimmee

Thank you! Computer Repair Kissimmee I'd run IE with the –extoff so cannot be an add-on. I understand msvcrt.dll to be a C++ runtime, so it might not actually be the runtime but IE causing a crash that appears in the runtime. It doesn't explain why it is happening on all of the school computers though.

Hi, According to this Event Log, We could find out that this crash is caused by the faulting module msvcrt.dll. It provides programs compiled with these versions of Visual C++ a typical set of library functions required by C and C++ programs. These include string manipulation, memory allocation, C-style input/output calls, etc. Usually, The threads or module of some applications that are not fully compatible with Windows 7 or IE 9 could be the cause of this issue. Maybe they applied for an API which can not be supported by msvcrt.dll. So I suggest you to boot the computer in Safe Mode with Networking or no add-ons Mode to determine whether the 3rd party software cause it. If the issue still occurs, please refer to the following link to disable all the BHOs. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298931 Regards, Juke TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I am running four computers. Three with Win 7 x64, one Win 7 x32 and one Vista x64. All have the same problem with IE9. IE9 will report an error and shut down. I have rebuilt the Vista system and not installed IE9 but have kept IE8. No problems. It clearly seems to be an IE9 problem. I do not see how to completly unistall IE9 and return all machines to IE8. Please advise.
