Internal DNS subdomains stopped working in Windows 7
I am running SBS2008 and I have set up a development server called manaodev for hosting websites during development. Each website on the server has its own subdomain set up in the Host Headers: website1.manaodev website2.manaodev website3.manaodev etc. and there is a matching subdomain set up in DNS on the SBS2008 server. When we were using Windows XP it was possible to type in "website1.manaodev" in the browser address, and the browser would show that website. Now we are moving to Windows 7 and all Windows 7 computers are not able to resolve "website1.manaodev" while the remaining Windows XP computers continue to work as before. As a workaround we have been adding the subdomains to the HOSTS files of the Windows 7 computers, and that works. However it is a workaround and I need to get subdomains working for Windows 7 just like they were working for Windows XP - automatically. I have reduced the problem to DNS. I can ping website1.manaodev from a Windows XP computer, but try the same command on Windows 7 and the subdomain cannot be resolved unless I use the FQDN: ------------------ C:\Users\cm>ping website1.manaodev Ping request could not find host website1.manaodev. Please check the name a nd try again. C:\Users\cm>ping website1.manaodev.company.manaosoftware.com Pinging website1.company.manaosoftware.com [192.168.2.12] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.2.12: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.2.12: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.2.12: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.2.12: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 192.168.2.12: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms ------------------ Any suggestions? Have you tried adding the subdomain (e.g. manaodev.company.manaosoftware.com) to the DNS search suffix list? If that works you can set this on the DHCP server. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hi, Please refer to Kerry’s suggestion to add the subdomain to DNS Search Suffix List to check the result. Meanwhile, I would like to share you the following article to configure a domain suffix search list on the Domain Name System clients. How to configure a domain suffix search list on the Domain Name System clients Thanks, NovakPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience I have tried that and it doesn't work. It does make it possible to resolve 'website1' but 'website1.manaodev' still does not resolve. I wonder why this works differently in Windows XP and Windows 7.
