Okay, so I've recently been trying to use Remote Desktop to access my laptop from my desktop. Both are running Windows 7 Ultimate, the desktop is 64-bit and the laptop is running 32-bit. They're both connected to a WiFi network using a pretty standard wireless router, and both of them can access the Internet (cable) through that with no problems whatsoever. Both of them have been assigned static IP addresses from within Windows. However, it's getting the two computers to communicate with each other that's proving to be difficult. I have changed the workgroup on both computers to a new one with a non-default name. Sometimes, I'll open up the saved RDC connection on my desktop, and it will connect with no problems to my laptop within a few seconds. A lot of the time, however, I'll get the message: Remote Desktop can't find the computer "NAME". This might mean that "NAME" does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to. Also, when opening up the Network window from the Start menu, the laptop will always appear in the list of computers there, but sometimes double clicking on it will show me the list of shared folders, and sometimes it will say: Windows cannot access \\NAME. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Clicking Diagnose, however, tells me that the Diagnostics Policy Service is not running (all attempts to start this service have also failed) Every time I've had these errors, both computers have been connected to the wireless network fine, and are able to browse the web with no issues - this isn't an issue of the wireless radio on the laptop switching off or it going into sleep mode, or anything. Oh, one more thing to note would be that I'm trying to run a game server on the laptop, which also gives me errors most of the time when trying to connect - in fact, users externally to my network seem able to connect more easily. So all in all, there's some kind of communication issue between these two computers. If anyone could shed some light on this, it'd be much appreciated.
