Interactive Services Dialog Detection Error
Hi, I keep getting an Interactive Services Dialog Detection error on my Vista Ultimate. Now I have read about this on the internet and also tried deleting services.exe using the Safe Mode. However it keeps reappearing again. Anyone who's faced a similar issue. The popup looks similar to the following: [Window Title]Interactive services dialog detection [Main Instruction]A program can't display a message on your desktop [Content]The program may need information or permission to complete a task. Why does this happen? Hide program details [Show me the message] [Remind me in a few minutes] [Expanded Information]Program(s) or devices(s) requesting attention. Message title: 1Program path: C:\Windows\system32\FileMaps\services.exeReceived: Today, August 19, 2008, 35 minutes ago This problem happens because of partial incompatibility with Windows Vista. Please contact the program or device manufacturer(s) for more information. I have Windows LiveOne care on my machine with updated definitions Thanks Suprotim Agarwal (MVP)

Hi, Haven't seen that folder in system32 anywhere. Upload the services.exe file to http://www.virustotal.com/and let's see what the scanners pick up. The error is caused by the fact that services.exe is trying to interact with session 1 and it doesn't have the required privileges. Sounds like legacy malware to me.

Hi, Thanks for the response. I did as advised and here is the analysis report. http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/4186f057de67255b277d49bc4c371da2 What do I do next? There is another file called smss.exe that was blocked by the firewall from accessing the internet. Regards, Suprotim Agarwal

Hi, I guess I have solved the issues temporarily by going into the safe mode , renaming the FileMaps directory to something else. I then deleted the services.exe file. I logged back into the computer in the normal mode and deleted the renamed directory. It's been quiet a while since that dialog popped up. When I read more about the malware, the info available is that this malware invites other malwares and thereby changes security settings. No wonder why I was unable to download the latest definitions of Live OneCare and Bit defender (which is still not possible to do). Other suggestions can be shared over here for the benefit for future users. Thanks. Suprotim Agarwal

Hi, I'm pretty confident that wasn't the only piece of malware you have on your system. Go to http://www.silentrunners.org/and download the .vbs script there. It will produce a log with the majority of registry loading points in your system. Post it here.

Hi, Thanks for the help Youn. I purchased Norton Internet Security 2008 and things seem ok now. Here's the log after running the script: http://cid-9985e8fe16c84ccb.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Startup%20Programs%20%7C5SUPROTIM%7C6%202008-08-20%2023.19.53.txt Regards, Suprotim Agarwal

Hi,The log is fine. I couldn't say the same for your choice of anti-virus, but that's a matter of oppinion. Anti-virus technology has become obsolete, has you might have noticed, so I wouldn't rely to heavily on it.As a guy once said, "a very boring browsing session is the best protection"

I am having the same problem (interactive services error message). It started the day my computer AUTOMATICALLY updated Vista with SP1. It is horrible! I can't open anything but Outlook (2003) and Internet Explorer. NOTHING else opens. I paid a fortune and bought Office 2007 - can't use it! I bought Fix It 9 and it did nothing to repair the problems. I have 673 registry errors - I can't fix them - I don't know how to fix registry errors. I'm at a total loss. And - I don't have 3-5 hours to sit on a phone with a help desk to go through every registry on this computer. Someone PLEASE help! I need to get this repaired!Thank you for helping!!!!SSobczyk
