Installing to Mapped drive with UAC On
I'm working with Epicor's software Vantage 6.1, it uses Progress database engine 9.1D and during the client install process you need to point the installer to the manufacturing software location and the progress software location, These both happen to be on a mapped drive. The pc will show these mapped drives in My Computer but during the install process they dont show up as a location to pick... Even if I type it in manually it doesn't work. Now I have shut of UAC and that allowed me to install the program, but as a few have noted I just can't go around and shut of UAC because then whats the point of even having the Vista operating system If there is any known work around for this such as allowing certain programs to access network drives for installation that would be great.

Mapped networked drive aren't available from elevated processes for funky technical reasons (basically you are logged on twice and each account has their own drive mappings). Workarounds are to elevate a command prompt first, map the network drive from there and then run the installer or to use UNC paths which don't have this limitation (assuming your app can install properly to a UNC path).

Ok, that worked but its still a pain to run it like that... I can makea script to map and then run the EXE once I have the CMD window open. It makes sense on why they are not showing up the more I learn about these "elevated" states... It makes figuring things out a little more difficult. BTW, next realease of the software supports UNC path installation, No more mapping, and its the only version that will be "supported" on vista, so I'm really pushing for them to upgrade for those reasons.

ThereIS a solution to access lan shares while runningelevated, although not supported by MS. Check this registry tip: http://www.techlog.nl/archive/2007/02/21/windows_vista_tip__enabledlink HTH, Thomas
