Installing drivers from print server on Windows 7 for non admin
I get an "access denied" error while installing a printer on Windows 7.Working with a domain environment we do not run admin's on our PC's unless we have to. We are in transition between Windows Xp and Windows 7 and we have just upgraded to a 64bit print server. When we install a printer on Windows 7 it says access denied. I don't want to make all my users admin or power user for that matter just to install a print driver on Windows 7. Any ideas?

Normally you should be able to add network printer unless you don't have permission to access resource. Can you please check sharing permission of the printer and check if the user has got proper permissions? Thanks, Swapnil Prajapati

Everyone has print permissions on the server. I checked the Security tab for the printers. However when they click to install the printer from the server it goes to locates the driver prompts you to install the driver and that's when it tells you access is denied. I have checked the permissions on the folders "drivers" and "prtprocs" under "C:\windows\system32\spool" of the print server and everyone has Read and Execute on these shares. I don't think the issue is on the print server I think the issues happens to be on the Windows 7 boxes when they are getting the driver from the print server (But I could be wrong I have been before).

I figured out my own issue Thanks for the help the following is what I did to fix the issue. There is a setting under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Printers called Point and Print Restrictions 1. Set it to Enabled 2. Put a check box in Users can only point and print to these servers: 3. Enter your print server name in the box servername.domainname.com 4. Security Prompts set both to Do not show Now your users should be able to add printers from your print server We are pushing this from Group Policy.
