If you mean that you want to have Windows 8.1 as your native OS but you want to run Hyper-V 2008 on it - the answer is no.

If you mean that you want to have Windows 8.1 as your workstation OS and you want to manage a remote Hyper-V 2008 server - the answer is still no.

If you want to have Windows 8.1 on your workstation and add Hyper-V (you will get Hyper-V 2012 R2) and you want to run Hyper-V Server 2008 in a VM - you can do that, but you cannot start VMs on the Hyper-V 2008 server VM.

If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your workstation add Hyper-V and install Server 2008 in a VM - you can absolutely do that!

Thanks for replies.

I want to run Windows 8.1 on your workstation add Hyper-V and install Server 2008 in a VM and from my workstation, access server 2008 as if it were on a remote server. To test server function from my workstation.

It sounds like this might be possible but still not sure.

Running any machine in a VM makes it just another machine.

As long at you only interact with that VM over the network, it might as well be locked in a server room.  It makes no difference.

If Im interpreting your scenario correctly, you want to have a Windows 8.1 workstation with Hyper-V enabled hosting a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine. If this is correct, then the answer is yes you can absolutely do this (so long as you have Windows 8.1 Professional or Enterprise). Depending on how the network for Hyper-V is configured, you can even access the Windows Server environment from the rest of the network if desired.
