Installing Media Feature Pack (KB968211) Hangs
I'm trying to install the Windows Media Feature Pack (KB968211) on Windows 7 Professional N (Which I think has SP1), but the installer gets as far as saying:
Initializing Updates....... Done
Installing Update for Windows (KB968211) (Update 1 of 1).....
Then it just sits and waits. The bar at the bottom never goes green. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen for things like this, including:
Re-downloading the update with two different browsers
Doing a clean boot
Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder
Running sfc /scannow
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
I've tried leaving it running overnight, but the CBS.log file just grew to around 90GB and filled up the hard drive. I had a bit of a look through it and it seemed to be stuck in some kind of loop I think.
I also tried running the system update readiness tool, but it just said the update did not install.
Any ideas?Andrew Porritt GoGo-Robot Ltd www.gogo-robot.com

I've uploaded the first part of the CBS.log file to pastebin: http://pastebin.com/1tR3vfau It just keeps repeating things similar to the last chunk over and over until it fills up the drive.Andrew Porritt GoGo-Robot Ltd www.gogo-robot.com

If you have SP1 installed you need the refreshed version of the Media Feature Pack.

I've tried installing the Media Format Feature Pack as well, but it does the same. Other updates install fine, so there must be something about the media ones that is causing a problem.Andrew Porritt GoGo-Robot Ltd www.gogo-robot.com

There's no antivirus installed. I tried disabling windows firewall and windows defender, but it still does the same. It looks like it might just be that it spends so much time accessing the log file that it can't do any of the other tasks. I watched the
file access in task manager's resources view, and it seems to access the files in SoftwareDistribution less and less until it just spends all its time writing to the log file. Is there any way of disabling writing to the CBS.log file?Andrew Porritt GoGo-Robot Ltd www.gogo-robot.com

Now I can confirm that the N edition does not have multimedia function. Therefore you are not able to install any packages for Windows multimedia. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I know the N edition does not have the multimedia functionality. That is why Microsoft released the Media Feature Pack (KB968211), which is specifically for adding the multimedia functionality into the N and KN versions. That is what I am trying to install.

If you have the system installation disk or system installation program, I suggest you run In-place Upgrade to repair the system.
If SP1 is installed after you installed the system, you need to uninstall SP1 first and then run In-place Upgrade. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I ended up doing a fresh install then making sure I installed the Media Feature Pack before anything else and it went in OK. Still not sure what was causing the problem though. Thanks for the help anyway.Andrew Porritt GoGo-Robot Ltd www.gogo-robot.com
