Installing IE8 on Windows 7 SP1
Hello, I have a user who is having issues with a needed Website. Her contact tells her that their Website does not work with IE9 and she needs to rollback to IE8. At first, I suggested trying to run the site in Compatibility Mode which did not resolve the issue. Despite all other efforts--and my own personal instincts to never rollback an Internet Browser--I agreed to uninstall IE9. As expected I was able to remove it from Programs and Features with little fuss. What I didn't expect was not being able to install any version of IE8 on this workstation. When I attempted to install a Windows XP copy of IE8 that I have, I got an error stating that this browser is incompatible with the current operating system. After not being able to find a version of IE8 for Windows 7, I downloaded a copy of IE8 for Windows Vista 32 bit. Unfortunately, this too is considered to be incompatible. The PC in question is a Dell Optiplex 380 with Windows 7 Pro (32 bit) SP1 pre-installed. This workstation also shipped with Internet Explorer 9 also pre-installed. I have other Optiplex 380 Dells that came with Windows 7 (non-service pack) and IE8 pre-installed. This tells me that there is a version of IE8 that is compatible with Windows 7; however, I have thus far been unable to find it. Is there a version of IE8 that can be downloaded and installed on a Windows 7 SP1 PC? Any efforts spent to help me resolve this issue are greatly appreciated.

Before you roll back to IE8, there is another method to attempt compatibility. While you are at the site giving you problems, press F12 which will activate a pop-up at the bottom of IE9. Click on Browser Mode: and you can select to go to IE7, IE8, IE9, or IE9 Compatibility View. This has worked for me on a few sites I have encountered problems using IE9.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks for the reply Rick. I forwarded you suggestion to my user and unfortunately it did not resolve her issue. Is there anyway that you know of to install IE8 on a Windows 7 SP1 PC that shipped with IE9? Thanks again

IE9 is not included in Win 7 SP1, so it should be listed in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Programs as an installed program. There is no separate IE8 for Windows 7 that can be downloaded and installed. Can you post the problem website URL here for me to try? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. If IE8 has ever been installed (which it most likely has), then uninstalling the IE9 Update will roll IE back to IE8. When I did that, it had retained all of my original IE8 settings, so it was like I never had IE9 installed. SC Tom

I should have typed in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates. I started in the Control Panel instead of Default Programs. Either way you get to exactly the same place!! Rick, I am pleased to report that uninstalling IE9 from the Installed Programs list was indeed the magic bullet. I suppose on some level I should have known that but questioning why I didn't seems to be as useful as questioning why people write Web pages that don't work with current Internet browsers. Either way, this issue is put to bed. Thanks again for your help.
