Hello, This is a solution for anyone interested. While I was studying for my Server 2012 R2 exam I noticed I was having trouble installing hyper-v on my machine. I had the original operating system 8.1 Basic installed. In order to have hyper v as a feature you will need 8.1 Pro or enterprise.
Once you go into programs and click programs and features, click turn windows feature on or off. Then click hyper v and click o k and close. My installation would go to 30% restart then go to 98% and undo changes. I tried installing just the hyper v manager and then going back to hyper v platform. I installed hyper v manager with no issues but when I went to add a server it would show my machine in the list with a red X.
There was nothing wrong with my hardware and Visualization was enabled in the BIOS.
I updated the BIOS firmware, installed 4 extra GB of memory, changed the Hey local machine max filters, ran all windows updates and optional updates, and still no Hyper v platform. I also tried installing using power shell and I had no success. I disabled my Kapersky anti-virus and then uninstalled it from the machine. I was then able to run hyper v platform and create a virtual machine. Not sure why Kapersky blocks hyper v platform but I now have my lab environment running. I also checked the log files to see if kapersky was to blame but there were no mention of Kapersky blocking visualization.
I believe this is an issue with Kapersky but might be a deeper problem.
