Installing Hyper-v Windows Server 2008 R2 on to Windows 8.1 Pro
I downloaded a 180 day trial hyper-v Windows 2008 R2 version to my Windows 8.1 Pro system.  I have 16 GB of Ram, and my system is an i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40Ghz.  Hyper-v manager is running, and I can click action, new virtual machine, and I can give it a name.  I have chosen to install the virtual machine on my D: drive.  It is an empty 400GB basic partition, except the swap file is located here (system managed).  I used Generation1 for the virtual machine, and gave it a startup memory of 2000MB, which was suggested on another website.  On configuring the network connection, I left it as Not Connected - plan to change later.  On connecting the virtual hard disk, I was not certain what to do between the 3 selections.  Default, Create a virtual hard disk, Use an existing virtual hard disk, or Attach a virtual hard disk later.  I chose the default, "Create a virtual hard disk" because it is a new virtual machine.  On Installation Options, I tried the "Install an operating system from a bootable  CD/DVD-ROM.  The 180 day trial was copied to this CD.  When starting the virtual machine, I received boot failed message, so I deleted the virtual machine in Hyper-v manager and associated folders on D.   I don't know what to do next?  Should I try to import a virtual machine from a configuration file somehow?

No, I believe this link is only for installing hyper-v Server 2012, I wanted hyper-v Server 2008 r2.  However, I did find a in Microsoft download center a Windows Server 2008 R2 iso evaluation (180 days) version, but I deleted it when it wanted to format my entire Disk 0.  Maybe I have to install the hyper-v Server 2012 Guest OS to work in Windows 8.1?  The VHD hyper-v windows 2008 r2 I found wouldn't install properly, so I will try this, Thanks.

You cannot install Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8.1  (it sounds like that is what you are trying to do).

You can install Server 2008 R2 in a VM.  Attaching the ISO to the VM and booting should work just fine - or download an evaluation VHD and then attach the evaluation VHD to your VM and boot.

Don't "copy" an ISO to a CD.  You need to use a special program to make the ISO work correctly.

All you really need to do is mount the ISO directly to the VM through the Hyper-V console, and you can install directly off the ISO.  Go to the settings of the VM and under Image File, browse and select your ISO.

Start the VM and it will boot directly from the ISO.
