Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922

Hi folks,

I have a HP Elitebook Folio 9470p.  It came with Windows 8, and I installed it on my corporate domain.  I was trying to do some Windows updates so  I could upgrade it to Windows 8.1, but it fails installing the updates, whether or not I try to install them one at a time or all of them.  It has about 18 updates it needs from security updates to a .net framework update.  I run Symantec EP, and disabled it, checked for driver updates for things like display and networking and they are all up to date.

I'm at a loss as to what to do.  It gives this error in the event log for each file, Event ID 20.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0922: Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2862152).

This is the example for KB2862152, but it gives the same error for every one.  I've tried to auto fix for Windows update issues and it fixed a couple of the issues, but not all of them, and provides no other help.

I also deleted folders and files from the SoftwareDistribution folder as well, to no avail.  Any ideas what I can do to get whatever updates it needs, so I can fully patch it, and upgrade it to Win 8.1?

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

I suggest we repair your system by following command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Then, try to reset Windows update components:

After that, lets start windows in clean boot mode and try to update again:

Hi Kate,

Thanks for the reply.  When I run the DISM command as suggested I get the attached Error: 0x800f0906.

A bit more info. The computer is working fine otherwise, but I can't seem to do Windows updates, and of course can't do the updates to move to Windows 8.1. Should I try to do the reset components? or work on this error first?

If I run the Reset Windows Update Components, I get this:

Not sure where to go from here, will wait to hear from some experts.  I really don't want to do any kind of format/reinstall as I have a ton of software installed that I use, would love to fix this if possible.

It seems to install any updates other than .net framework and security updates fine.  It will install Office 2013 up dates and general windows updates fine.

Hi,

Need your Windowsupdate.log and DISM.log for further research.

Please upload into skydrive or other similar network drives and post back the shared link.

Look forward to your response.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your help.  I have made a folder on my dropbox account (not currently using SkyDrive, but I plan to) and put those logs there.  Here is the link:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h34ll3vw5odm7nr/kAauwEqbwQ

See if that will let you in.

Hi Kate,

I  ran the steps in the link and they ran successfully.  I rebooted and re-ran the DISM check and got the same error again.

Any other ideas?  This is really discouraging...

It did install the .net framework 3.5 which it wouldn't do previously, but there are still about 30 security updates and important updates that it fails on whether or not I try to install them individually or as a whole.

Hi,

It indicates that system files and components were corrupted.

Let's backup files and apps and try to refresh Windows to see whether we can get this issue fixed.

Keep post.

Hi Kate,  I will search, but might need a bit more details as to what you mean by backing up files and refresh Windows?
December 23rd, 2013 3:45pm

Hi Kate and Mr Kywildcat,

Since yesterday, I am running with ** exactly ** the same problems, after launching a windows update on many KBs , with : 1) some successful updates (Office 2010, SharePoint, KB2929825, KB2916626, KB2877213, and some others) 2) many errors, all numbered 0x800F0922, for instance (i french, sorry) :

 ... and so on.

I tried Fixit, which "fixed" some problems, and then retried windows update : same result (0x800F0922 errors)

Then tried the famous "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" with exactly the same status as mentionned by Mr Kwildcat "source file could'nt be downloaded, Erreur : 0x800f081f".

I am quite disappointed to see that :

- many posts about this error associated with Windows update, and few convincng or global solutions,

- current post suspended before Christmas, with an understandable and legitimate question : what is "refresh Windows ?", still awaiting for a response, I am afraid to see.

- my system is running well, protected, and generally OK ; I have no sign that it could be corrupted, and I suppose that this error hides an effective "windows update" problem (which maybe applies on global/multi updates, or vs antivirus protection, or some specific case) which would be usefully investigated with another method that reinstalling Windows.

If I can contribute to investigate, I can give requested informations. At this time, my updates are pending and I a waiting for a solution.

Thanks

Phil

try install 8.1 fresh after the backup from a normal image, and then see if it updates properly

after updates, then connect to the domain

February 15th, 2014 6:43pm

Hi Phil,

Yes, Kate stopped responding to me, and so I have done nothing more on my issue.  It's frustrating that I can't get everything updated to current levels, but like you, my system is working.  Having to reinstall the OS should not be required.  It would seem you could get past this in some other way.

I haven't spent any time on it since I didn't know what "refresh Windows" really meant either.  If I think of anything I will let you know.

Thanks!

Refresh saves documents etc, nuke windows and programs

like a clean install, no need to backup the user files

February 16th, 2014 6:49pm

Hi MM. Mr Kywildcat and Vegan Fan,

GOOD NEW ! At this time, my issue is solved. The only black side is "how ?" : I hope that we will get a response some day ; however, and for in information  pnly - hoping this could help someone - I resume some actions which allowed this the happy end :

1) about installing 8.1 : I wanted to be sure that gain/pain ratio was positive, and that upgrading from a (potentially) damaged system would'nt produce something looking like a new Win 8.1, but difficult to maintain and keeping some negative potentialities.

2) I was influenced by the fact that this 0x800F0922  error acted as "a serial killerror", whose root cause could be a unique update error at reboot time concerning several (>20) packages, so I decided to test some manual upgrades.

3)   Manual update (i.e. manual download and maunching of .msu packages) of the 2 following packages (whose update previously failed on a Windows Update) was successful : .NET Framework version 3.5 for  x64 (KB2898866) and Camera Codec Pack Windows 8 for x64 (KB2899190)

4) So I decided to try Windows Update on a selection of packages, first : those concerning .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.5 (that is: KB2898866, 2901120, 2898865) --> Successful !

5) finally, I selected almost all other packages, with some exceptions wich I (think to) have no need for : KB2871690, 2904659, 2843630. To be complete, here is the list of pakages updated one time at all :

KB 2892074, 2893294, 2893984, 2909210, 2912390, 2916036, 2889784,2903938, 2911101, 2913152, 2917499

--> always succesful.

I am not a specialist, but I uess that this 0x800F0922 error hides another problem which is globally "H-RESULTED" to all updates pending in one update operation with reboot. This could be assumed from this CBS.log exterped from my last wrong attempts, where root cause seems not to be 0x800f0922, but 0x80004003 :

2014-02-15 21:29:13, Info                  CBS    Could not get active session for current session file logging [HRESULT = 0x80004003 - E_POINTER]
2014-02-15 21:29:13, Info                  CBS    Not able to add pending.xml.bad to Windows Error Report. [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

2014-02-15 21:29:18, Error  CBS    Startup: Failed to process advanced operation queue, startupPhase: 0.  A rollback transaction will be created. [HRESULT = 0x800f0922 - CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED]

Anyway, thanks to you who spent some of your time to describe issues and search/ suggest solutions ; I will upgrade my system to 8.1 anyway, some of this day, when I am sure that my configuration does not hides some other problem. I thing that potential issue remains until maybe a new KB corrects it, wrong :-) ?

And I hope that you - Mr Kywildcat - can upgrade your system on "current levels" trying similar attempts.

Phil,

This is great news, congratulations!  I will attempt similar and see if I can get the same results.  I did think it had something to do with some .net framework updates, and I could not install them one at a time.  Perhaps downloading then installing is the trick.

I will try what you have suggested and post back as soon as I can!  Thanks for posting your resolution!

Reinstalling all of my programs is not a good solution for me, so if  I can do it with your solution, I will be very happy.

Phil,

I did download the .net update and manually install it, then when my computer rebooted it went through a disk check.  After I rebooted again, I checked to see and the .net update KB2898866  is now saying it is successfully installed.  I'm going to follow your path and see where it takes me now.

Thanks for the reply. Well, when I try to download Office 2013 updates, about 15 of them, they installed fine.  When I try to do windows updates or security updates in any batch form, they fail, and I get the "Reverting Changes" message.  I have about 75 of those updates, and I guess I can try to do some of the manually, but what a pain that is.

Are you thinking some of my issues might be a pending drive failure?

never assume a disk is invincible, backup important files daily, even better is 2 backups as one bay be damaged
