Insall Lync 2010 Standard edition Archiving Role

We are running Lync 2010 standard edition with SQL express 2008 R2 with 10 GB DB size in our environment and its working absolutely fine. I need some help in deploying archive role for the lync server to archive the IM only? I am not sure how to proceed with it as I have deployed Lync 2010 standard with SQL express 2008 R2 ?

Do we have archiving role supported for LYNC 2010 standard server ?

If yes, How can I move my existing SQL express DB to SQL standard/Enterprise edition server ?

You can collocate the Archiving Server,Monitoring Server or both on the Lync 2010 Standard Edition server but this is only for Testing porpose and NOT Supported in production.

The high level overview of steps include enabling Archiving feature on Pool properties  from Topology builder, then publish topology and run the deployment wizard etc.. you can reveiw below article for details

Good afternoon,

Your SQL express edition that is currently collocated on your Front End server is for your Lync back end database(s). This is fine, there is no requirement to move this in your scenario.

You now want to deploy archiving. Archiving cannot be deployed on SQL express and must use a fully blown SQL edition on a separate server. To move forward you must deploy a new archiving server that has full SQL server on it, you will then use an instance on that SQL server for your archiving requirements. As mentioned, you do not need to move or worry about the existing SQL express databases on your Front End server. So in answer to your questions;

1.) In Lync 2010, yes archiving is a role that can be deployed.

2.) You do not need to move your existing SQL express instances.

Kind regards

Agree with BenDonaldson you have to install the dedicated SQL server in order to install the Archiving Role.

No need to move your existing Lync database. Enable the Archiving Role from the Topology Builder and enable the Archiving role and Publish the Topology

Hi RIWAA,

As others suggested, you have to deploy a new server for Archiving Role. The Archiving Server requires a database, but the database can be collocated on the Archiving Server.

Best regards,

Eric
