Incremental disk backup?
I've noticed the backup tool is much improved over Visa. However, I don't see any option for incremental disk/system backups. Is there such an option hidden somewhere or is that not included? If not, I'd really like to see that added to the final build. Microsoft could incorporate some of the code from Home Server if necessary, minus the network consolidation features of course.I actually really like OS X's Time Machine model of backup where both file and system are backed up regularly with a simple interface and incremental backups may be consolidated over time as disk space requirements dictate. In general I've never really "gotten" why people like OS X over Windows so much. But Time Machine is one feature where I think they really got it right. Both because of the functionality and also because it is presented up front and clearly to new users. Backup is probably the most important maintenance task which probably >90% of users don't do. Windows 7 could be the oportunity to fix that.I'd also like to see an option for incremental backups to be performed in conjunction with restore points so when, for instance, installing an application requiring admin rights, an incremental backup could be performed prior to running the installer in admin mode. This would ensure that if something went very wrong (malware, seriously incompatible driver, etc.) the system could be fully restored to the state prior to the install. I realize the restore point itself will give some of this functionality, but I don't really trust restore points since they seem to rever only system settings but will not, for instance, remove files that were added since the last restore. I'd also like to see backups taken of the boot loader since from what I understand there are now rootkits and install their own bootloaders so that they can take control of the machine prior to Windows even being loaded.Speaking of which, I always set up at least 2 partitions on my systems, one for the OS and applications, the second for my data. The first thing I do is relocate all the data/library folders to the second partition. The advantage is if I need to wipe or restore the system, I can do so from the first partition without losing any user data from the second. I actually think this would be a useful way to have the default setup work. Also, I have a question about the quality of system restore with Windows 7. I considered Vista's system backup to be downright dangerous as when I did test it I found that even minor differences in the partition table prevented the backup from being restored. The fact that it was not always possible to restore a backup to the exact same hardware, and essentially impossible to restore to a new harddrive of a different size makes the backup essentially worse than useless as it gives a false sense of security.Have these issues been fixed in Windows 7 system backup? I haven't had an opportunity to test it. Are there any issues with the new backup when restoring to different hard drives or different partition sizes? What about completely new hardware? If your whole system dies, is there any way to restore to a new system? Thanks!
