Increasing laptop memory from 1 G to 2 G
I have Windows 7 RC1 ins talled on an ACER Aspire 5100 Laptop, together with Windows XP. I increased the memory by replacing the existing two 512 m 'sticks' with two 1 gig 'sticks'. The XP os recognized the increase in memory from 1 gig to 2, but the Windows 7 RC1 did not (still indicates 1 gig). Can anyone give me info as to whether there is a 'switch' to activate in Windows 7 RC1 for it to recognize the increase in memory? Many thanks. J Arthur Ryan

J Arthur - Windows 7 (as all previous versions) should detect the RAM that's installed automatically. There is no "switch". Have you checked the BIOS to see if the memory is registered properly?

Wouldn't the fact that the other os on the laptop, Windows XP did recognize the upgrade indicate that the bios had accepted the increase? It shows the increase from 1 to 2 gigs of RAM.

Have you checked the Acer web site to see if there is a newer BIOS available. Could be a disconnect between Win7 and your current BIOS version.

Yep. However ACER doesn't want to talk about anything to do with Windows 7 'til it's released in final form (Oct. 09). Even paid to talk, but no go. After it's released for sale, then they'll talk. Huh!

How did you install Win7for dual boot- did you create a new partition - or did you use a VHD ?Take a look at your memory usage using "Resource Monitor" / "Memory" tab / "Physical Memory" does this still only show 1GB?Have you considered trying an update/repair install over the existing Win 7 installation?Graham

Installed RC1 from a disk that had the RC1 Version 7100 on it. Did a partition. Checked Resource Monitor and it also shows 1.024 Gig, not the 2 Gig that's in there. Now will try the update/repair install. Wish me luck!
