Increase my Max number of Inbound Connections in XP Pro SP2 by upgrading to windows 7?
I currently have a central xp pro sp2 computer in which ten other sessions are connected which is a maximum number of inbound connections the OS will allow. Because any one machine (10 of which) may require more than one session e.g. to print, share files or to run Sage off Server etc (the only functions we require a network for), we are having connection problems as expected, so i've set out looking for fixes to increase the number of sessions to at least 20. 20 connections a second should still control security threats. (The sessions that I am referring to are found in Administrative-Tools > Computer Management > Sessions) I would like some advice on the two solutions I may or may not have found to increase the number of inbound connection to windows XP Pro SP2 I have found this patch which claims to do the job despite mixed opinions on how safe it is http://www.mydigitallife.info/2005/11/15/windows-xp-sp2-tcp-connection-limit-event-id-4226/ . What do you make of this? Upgrading to Windows 7 may remove the cap or increase the cap on connections according to http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/1102-63-inbound-connections-limit-windows and also http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/07/half-open-outbound-tcp-connections-limit-removed-in-windows-7-and-vista-sp2-no-patch-required/. Unfortunately i cannot find anything more legit from the microsoft website. Im sorry to say, i just dont trust the rubbish you read else where. Im getting drilled by everyone who is 'hot desking' the 10th sessions available. We are trying to avoid Windows Server for the time being. What can you recommend? Hello mamastr, The maximum number of inbound connections is limited by the operating system and cannot be changed. If you find a patch that isn't from Microsoft, not only it may not safe, but you maybe breaking EULA. If you read the EULA for Windows 7, under the section in "Device Connections" it allows up to 20.
