Importing files from Outlook Express to Outlook
My OE 6 has disappeared and so I have resurrected Outlook. I am trying to import my OE6 .dbx files. I go through the Import and Export process, but when I try to access the Local Settings folder where the files live, the folder does not come up on the File tree on the Browse for folders window - presumably because it is hidden. Is there a way round this? Thanks guys and gals,Alastair1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi al_in_notts, To see hidden files: 1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options. 2. Click the View tab. 3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders. Note To access Windows Explorer, click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. From the following article: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx Hope that helps! Thanks for the tip. Actually I seem to have mail in both OE6 and OL, but due the problems with OE6, I want to consolidate in OL. however, as I said above, I cannot uncover the hidden files.Alastair

In WinXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are marked as hidden by default. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders via Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View (cf. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html).OE and OL are both running on the same computer, yes?HOW TO: Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook [applies to OL 2007, too] http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010943871033.aspxThe above reference notwithstanding, it would be infinitely better to export your messages to OL (via OE File | Export | Messages | ... ), especially if you want to preserve the messages' original timestamps. Also see...HOW TO: Copy Outlook Express address book contacts to Outlook http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010919601033.aspx [Note to self: cf. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/thread/cf0a8097-c007-4a01-bc6b-10c4d95d519b] ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

YAY!! Now I feel we are getting somewhere! I have unhidden the .dbx files. See below! In WinXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are marked as hidden by default. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders via Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View (cf. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html). DONEOE and OL are both running on the same computer, yes? YES.HOW TO: Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook [applies to OL 2007, too] http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010943871033.aspx Does not help. after Step 5 it asks me to select a file - this is not shown on this webpageThe above reference notwithstanding, it would be infinitely better to export your messages to OL (via OE File | Export | Messages | ... ), especially if you want to preserve the messages' original timestamps. That is EXACTLY what I am trying to do!!. owever i have to try to IMPORT them as I cannot OPEN OE6 to EXPORT them!!Also see...HOW TO: Copy Outlook Express address book contacts to Outlook http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010919601033.aspx Done that OKKeep the ideas coming!!Alastair

...However i have to try to IMPORT them as I cannot OPEN OE6 to EXPORT them!! Al, let's get your other thread resolved first before we tackle moving the OE data to OL...Problems with OE6 http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/thread/cf0a8097-c007-4a01-bc6b-10c4d95d519b You will NOT be happy with the results if you import the OE data into OL, believe me!

Good point!Just as a matter of fact though, when I try to use the OL import tool, I get an error message: the Mail folder could not be opened. If another application is using this file, please close it and try again. Just thought I would mention it in case it is relevant. Thanks, Alastair
