Important Vista services have stopped. DHCP, Firewall, Please help
Hey Vista Experts. Need some help. I am running Vista Home, 32 bit, with SP2. I turned on my laptop, and there was no wireless internet. Turns out a lot of important services have stopped and I cant turn them on. They include: DHCP Client Diagnostic Policy Service IPsec Policy Agent Network List Service Network Location Awareness Office Source Engine Windows Firewall Windows Time I managed a workaround by defining an IP manually to my wireless card, and at least it connected to the internet, but DHCP is still stopped. So is the Diagnostic service, so the "repair button" wont work either. When I go to services and try to start them, I get the error, "Access is denied", or "The dependency service or group failed to start". My Network sharing centre is saying the same thing. Firewall is also disabled, error is "Security centre cant turn on windows firewall". Something is clearly stopping these services from starting. I dont know if its a virus or a recent Vista upgrade. Sometimes its bloody hard to tell them apart. Already ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Found nothing. Tried restarting a dozen times. Nothing. Removed my user password. Still nothing. I am currently in the process of downloading Vista SP2 again. Even though its already installed, should I try to reinstall the SP in hope of everything going back to default settings? 6 hours later------ Googling around I discovered that "Base Filtering Engine" is very important for DHCP and Firewall functions. But I cant find a "Base Filtering Engine" anywhere!!! Not in my services, and its not even listed in the Windows Firewall dependencies. Can anyone confirm that Vista 32 bit version should have a "Base Filtering Engine"? How do I get a new "Base Filtering Engine"? Please help.

Hi, See this link for Windows Firewall and its dependecies. http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/Services/Windows_Firewall.htm Start - type in Search box -> Services find at top of list - Right Click - RUN AS ADMIN Hope this helps Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right. I have already tried this. Even running as an Admin, I get Access Denied errors. When turning on the firewall, the error is that some Dependencies are turned off or marked for deletion. I now know that my BME is not running, and is not even listed in the Firewall Dependencies like it should be. How do I restore BME??

Not sure how we ended up on TechNet however might get some good ideas here. This is my last suggestion in the Answers thread.http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistasecurity/thread/550cb4d4-b77c-4e5c-9e9b-78f6b782678fIts not BME it is BFE and that is a service that shows as dependency for the Firewall. You might have to work your way through the dependencies of each.BFE dependencieshttp://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/Services/Base_Filtering_Engine.htmAre you running Norton and/or any other antivirus or security products? These have been known to cause the issue. If so try using the manufacturer's removal toolsto clear them out while trouble-shooting. Download Avast - Home - Free so you have an antivirus while testing.-----------------------------------------------------Do these to clear up possible corruption (first check all the service dependencies).Start - type this in Search Box -> COMMAND find at top and RIGHT CLICK - RUN AS ADMINEnter this at the prompt - sfc /scannowHow to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista cbs.loghttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228Also run CheckDisk so we can rule out corruption as much as possible. How to Run Check Disk at Startup in Vistahttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html------------------------------------------------------Then -Make another user - ADMIN with same password - REBOOT (not just logoff) - logon on to the new account.Use it to lower and raise your account - to used then admin then user then admin - repeat 3 times to clearout corruption. Nowis the issue cleared in this new account? If so check the other one now. If it is a corruption issue you might have to migrate to a new account. Make a 3rd one so you always havean ADMIN account you do not use to fix and test.Fix a corrupted user profilehttp://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-AU/help/769495bf-035c-4764-a538-c9b05c22001e1033.mspxHope this helps.Rob - Bicycle - Mark Twain said it right.
