If I have Windows Defender why do I need MS Security Essentials.
Should I be running both Defender and MS Security Essentials.Defender gets updated definitions regularly. I can use Defender to do a full scann of the computer.1. Is Defender Anti-Virus software? (what is Defender?)2. If I run MS Security Essentials shoud I un-install Defender first so I am not running two AV softwares at once?3. Why would I run both?ThanksGary

I just took a look a Defender and it is turned off. I did not turn it off so it must have gotten turned off by the Security Essentials install. Perhaps they don't both run after all.

cgaryc,Windows Defender is a security product from Microsoft that only protects you agianst Spyware.Microsoft Security Essentials protects you against Spyware and viruses. So when you install Microsoft Security Essentials the setup will disable Windows Defender.Just for the simple reason that it makes no sense to have 2 anti-spyware software's. This will only decrease the performance of your machine. So, to give an exact answer on your questions:1. No, only anti-spyware2. No, there is no need to uninstall Windows Defender. BUT you need to uninstall other 3rd party anti virus software.3. This is normaly not possible because the MSE setup disables Windows Defender. And it would make no sense it will only decrease the performance of your machine.More info about Windows Defender is here:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspxAnd more info about Microsoft security essentinalshttp://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/support.aspx?mkt=en-us#mainNavKind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER
