I wish to stop Outlook express from compacting my mail.
It continues to request to compact even after I allow it to compact. When I say "ok, compact" it takes less than 10 seconds to do it. This just started to request this within the last 3 days and continues to request even when I allow it to. Approximately every 10 minutes on the average.1 person got this answerI do too

Ah, sorry not real familiar with this format. Yes Windows Search is, however, I NEVER use it and actually don't know anything about it.

Ah, sorry not real familiar with this format. Yes Windows Search is, however, I NEVER use it and actually don't know anything about it.No worries. Even though you don't actively use Windows Search, it is running all the time and you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. You get the compact prompt from a counter in the registry, so if you see it again, let it compact to reset the counter and you should be good for 100 closings of OE now.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

OK done, only indexing "Documents and Settings" now. What does it do when it's indexing? Should it be indexing anything at all or anything else? I currently have my C: drive which is 350-GB, my D: drive is 1-TB and an external H: drive which is also 1-TB if that makes any difference. Thanks Mike.

Read what it can do here.http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowssearch4.mspx I have no use for it myself. Is OE OK now? That's the most important issue.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

You keep getting new threads because you haven't told us how to stop this constant "compacting" message.

You keep getting new threads because you haven't told us how to stop this constant "compacting" message. The same person asked the same question multiple times by starting different threads. You on the other hand, are just hijacking threads instead of starting your own.If I didn't tell this OP how to stop it, why did he/she mark it as the answer????-------------------------The problem is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100 closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even if you are not using OE.There are a number of programs and actions that may be causing this after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLLWindows {Desktop} SearchMailwasherNero plug-in(s)Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry count.Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3.Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6fIn the case of Windows Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell it to stop indexing OE.Windows Search. Set Desktop Search Options: http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspxIn the Windows Control Panel | Indexing Options | Modify. Clear the check box for Outlook Express. In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/scout/NeroScout_Enu.pdfIn the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add these file types:.eml, .dbx & .nwsBruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA
